Big Wings - who wants one? (kinda commercial post)

I am in the process of having a purpose built wing made up for this seasons racing - wondered if anybody else wants one?

Basically it is the full width of the car (unlike the Lotus MS jobbie) and will be adjustable, and depending on how many I order it will cost in the region of 725 + VAT + delivery. It will retain the standard mounts, and will provide noticeable downforce and give less drag than the standard wing. The Lotus Motorsport wing retails at 850 + VAT.

If I have firm commitment (ie 100% cos its my cash on the line), then I will increase my order. I would also appreciate a deposit up front. A number of regulars on here can vouch for me…

(I will be doing this through Lanzante Lotus who won the first year of Lotus Roadsports, and who will be competing in this years British GTs in an Elise. Dean Lanzante is fully aware of this, and would rather this come through me so he doesn’t have to do any work )

Cheers

I assume only really for track only cars (ie. not necessarily road legal)?

AndyD will want to know if you can put little metal studs in to the end planes (a la a Noble)!

Ian

It is my belief (and I may be wrong) that it would be legal for the road because it is aftermarket. Lotus would not be able to sell a car with that wing themselves. Bit like the 190 kit - Lotus could not sell the Exige 190, but could market the kit separately.

BTW estimated delivery time is 3 weeks.

Cheers

Mark

What are they made from - ali, glass fibre or carbon? Presumably they have massive end plates too?

Presumably they have massive end plates too?

More room for Exiges.com stickers?!

I’d like one. But I can’t really afford it right now
Have you got any figures (estimated or otherwise) for the relative changes in downforce and drag?
If I had the money/time I’d try to get a more efficient wing design to produce the same downforce as the standard wing for less drag. It would need to be full width, have big end plates, and have a lower angle of attack. It should also have a sharper trailing edge. Anybody think they can make one for 2-3 hundred quid?

Its carbon and does not include end plates - you could either get some made up yourself (easy) or they can be sorted at extra cost.

Cheers

According to Dean the wing they were running for the last 2 years was generating up to 300kg of downforce. I have no figures on drag - sorry.

Cheers

300kg of downforce

Blimey! At top whack I assume? Isn’t the std item (that I must admit I do really rather like the look of) give about 80kgs at a ton?

Definately need the front splitter with that bad boy back there!

Ian

Mark i’m really interested, but that price is really high. Then i think he can also include end plates…for the price!

“It will retain the standard mounts”
U mean for Exiges or motorsport elises body?

We’re gonna be doing wheelies!

Unfortunately the price is pretty fixed - although when I get mine I’ll sell you my standard Exige wing and you can mount it above your existing one to provide double the downforce

Nicholas

To be honest, for a carbon wing, the price is “not unreasonable”, even though it is “high”.

Mark, what sort of finish is the carbon - the “shiny/polished” type or the “matt”? IIRC the shiny finish tends to be the more expensive of the two.

Either way, it’s sadly out of my “Exige budget” for the foreseeable future

Um - to be honest I don’t know. Dean originally specced it for their GT car, so its going to be up to the job. There are 3 ordered at the moment including one for myself, Dean is happy to increase the order but not spec a new wing…

If there are more questions about it I’ll hold fire until there are several cos I don’t want to be bothering him every 5 minutes!

Cheers

Isn’t the std item (that I must admit I do really rather like the look of) give about 80kgs at a ton?

Ian

Actually no, not even that much. The figure of 80 kilos applies to the whole car at 100mph.
The official figure is 45kilos at the rear and 35kilos at the front.
How much of that 45 comes from the wing and how much from the diffuser/overall shape of the car I don’t know.

I have a question about the wings, just for curoisity’s sake. Would you need to add downforce to the front of the car after increasing the downforce in the rear by so much?

I know this is more than likely a stupid question but please bear with me, I am fairly new to Aerodynamics.

Thanks,

Sam

Sam, that’s what the posts above regarding the front splitter are refering too. Lotus had a bigger wing and better front aero (usually refered to as the ‘Motorsport splitter’) on the race series cars.

With that amount of extra rear downforce I think you’d be mad not to improve the front. You’d understeer off on the first mildly quick bend without it!
