Didn’t want to hi-jack the drilled or grooved disc thread so was wondering where is the best place to get a full set of brake discs (mine are now in a poor condition)?
The car is only used for road use and no track, reading the other thread it looks like i should go for the grooved option even for road?
Thanks in advance
Tanman
I used these before which seemed better than the standard ones. They did rattle a bit on the passenger side as the pads caught the grooves before I added the anti-rattle pads.
What pads did you use with these discs Neil?
Mine are due for replacement soon…
Currently have pagid rs 42’s I think (i didn’t fit them)
Cheers JK
thanks neil, as JK said above- what pads are you using?
You can’t beat Performance Friction PF01 front PF97 rear IMO.
Performance wise you are right, best I’ve used yet, downside my silver wheels are black very quickly Especially on track
Do you want performance or cosmetics? Its not easy to get both, you have to compromise performance to keep things shiny.
Get some black wheels and its all good!
I can live with the dust just need to make sure others are aware they are a bit dusty
Imagine if you had white wheels …thinking about it my white wheels mainly exist in my imagination they are invariably grey
From memory I used 42’s and 14’s. The 14’s work well but squeel like a git until given some abuse on track, and can revert to squeely state if not abused often enough.
Also the abs doesn’t really seem to get one with them, so harder to modulate at the end of the braking zone than a 42.
The 42’s were quieter and more predicable however they did suffer a little bit of transfer at big braking tracks like Donny and became ‘grumbly’ in-between sessions although a few hard stops always sorted it out after about 3 laps.
A few people say that 14’s are rubbish when cold. I think they’re better than a 42 at all temps, it’s just that they get much better once up to temp and if used outside of their temp range for too long (ie lots of road driving) they revert to just working via friction instead of that chemical bond breaking rollocks and wear the pad transferred layer off.
I’m running PF97’s on AP295’s on the front at the mo with rs14’s (soon to be pf97’s) on eliseparts ali-bells on the rear. My fronts squeel like hell for some reason (worse than a rs14) although no-one elses seem to. I think this is just because I previously used pagids on the discs which are a slightly different shape. They work well though and seem to actually get better over a session instead of trailing off which suits me. Also as an endurance pad they are lasting forever. I could wear a 14 down to 2mm in 3 days whereas my fronts are barely half worn after maybe 20 days.
JFK, i’d keep an eye on yours, the pagids tend to overheat and disappear at an alarming rate once they get down to a 1/3rd left IME.
You also won’t need anti-rattle pads if you decide to go with PF’s as the backing plate bit is slightly bigger (ie. you physically won’t get them in with buffer pads in place).
For road use only I would go for SBS pads either from questmead direct or from gugliu… (sp?) and save your money. Same as 42 (makers used to work for pagid…).
Have found the PF01’s to:
- Never squeal
- Be cheaper than Pagids
- Last longer than Pagids
- Perform better than Pagids
- Be a little dustier, but isn’t it more about go than show
Where can I get PF pads Damon?
Their are lots of suppliers, Questmead are popular but sometimes get funny about non-trade sales.
I can also get them if you want some. The race team I work for uses PF pads. Send me a PM if you want some. I don’t make money on this, just a nice offering for fellow forum members.
Cheers Damon, will let you know if I need back pads too
Steve
Is that what I’ve got, I’ve noticed the backs wear quicker than the fronts? They do actually squeal, a little bit but nothing like half as bad as Padgids…yikes they’re loud! Also PF’s are very very dusty but the dust gets less and less the more I’ve used them. I love my brakes, I use them hard and these pads are the feckin’business. Nice one D.
The dust is because they are a slot in and use straight away pad. We put them in the RSR at Spa in the 24 hour and send the driver out, first corner, bang, they work.
The 97 is softer so the rear will wear more than the 01 but for me it gives a good balance.
The Exige is the first rear engined car I have driven and it is surprising to me how different from the front engined car how quickly the rears wear compared.
I reckon on the RS6 and CSL I had 3 or 4 to 1 front to rear replacements. Whereas on the Exige I’d put it 2 to 1.
