Best dampers for an S1

Probably need a replacement - so I’ll be picking your brains at Anglesey - what do you reckon? Single adjustable, I reckon.

Nitrons??
Ohlins??
Quantum??
Bilstein??
Others??

VHPD standard S1 K series - a few track days a year…

Now there is a leading question, best I go get some popcorn…

You are doing the right thing. Have a passenger ride in as many cars as possible at Anglesey and make up your mind from there.

I will be in my White S2 that has single way 46mm Ohlins on it, and I would be only too pleased to show you how well they work.

Thank, Sean - I’ll take you up on that, mate!

Mark

I would think the bottom line is how much money have you got. If you don’t mind spending on the best then from listening to the people I trust on here you cannot buy better than the Ohlin.
After that I guess are the Nitron, they have spent years perfecting their product for the elise based cars and offer a wide range of choice to suit your needs. They are also very helpful and will taylor a damper to your spec, bang for buck they are pretty good.
Quantum seem to get good reviews from the guys racing in Oz but I have not seen much info really over here yet.
The Billys are a great road damper but not so great if you are tracking it, then there are the new GAZ monotubes which are obviously very new and I have not seen any real feedback from anyone that I would trust enough to buy a set, I think time will tell.

I’m running the Hofmanns Nitrons (one way adjustable) and have found them to be just about perfect. They’re great on track, for which I’ve had the car optimised, but on bumpy B-roads they’re better than the OEM LSS were.

I’d be going for Nitrons, Ohlins or Quantums since these all seem to be the best quality, although the Nitrons are probably the best tailored to the car. There are plenty of options within the ranges too, and the general advice is to get the best you can afford without going overboard. Don’t bother with more than single-way adjustable if you’re not a chassis set-up god.

I know I am uber biased towards Ohlins, but what makes you say that?? Most of the serious race boys are running Ohlins and the factory upgrade is also an Ohlins damper

Are you sure about the factory uopgrade Sean?

I’m out of the loop, but I thought a lot of the LOT racers had switched to Quantums these days ?

Sean,

If you’re talking three-way adjustables and you’re a serious race type person and have the time and knowledge to set a particular car up, I’m doubtless the Ohlins are a superior product to the Nitron… the Quality of the top-shelf Ohlins gear is astounding.

However, for those of us whose car is a cross-between road and trackday car whose car must work over a range of conditions, and have simpler adjustment (like one-way), the Nitron is optimised to be pretty close to “ideal” despite the lack of individual slow/fast bump/rebound adjustment.
