It does sound nuts. Gave it full beans through the gears out a roundabout on a dualcarriageway, and every time you drop the clutch it pops and bangs, right through the gears. Brilliant!
how much did it set you back?
You would be best to email Jim direct with what you need , his address is [email protected]
Need some vids mate!!!
So how does all this conversion work effect the S2 with supercharger. Why is it that Lotus havent yet brought out a back box for the supercharged car and yet a 3rd party manufacturer seems to have? id be very dubious having just spent 40k on a car to fit an exhaust that could potentially f*ck my engine up. Im no technical wizard but from what Ive read, the exhaust and air flow on supercharged engines is fairly crucial, so if your changing de-cat pipes and back boxes for aftermarket systems how do you know they’ve been long term tested on the car. At least with a standard system you have got some comback during warranty if anything does go wrong.
Whatever you say about failures not being attributable to an aftermarket exhaust, id love to see what Lotus have to say under the circumstances that an aftermarket system has been fitted to a car where a serious engine component failure occurs.
On another note how do aftermarket exhausts that arnt officially Lotus effect insurance premiums?

Any fitment of non-standard exhaust (made by whoever) should be declared to your insurer - at the date of fitment, not policy renewal date. Often, there isn’t any increase in premium (whether it’s a Lotus or another), but that will depend your own insurance company.
I would also tend to agree with your comments about the warranty, although that’s not based on experience, nor knowledge of any issues to date.
it is the single reason i wanted an ‘official’ exhaust. regardless of quality, durability, performance etc etc the old stage2 sounded wonderful (to me) and was fully covered. it failed all the time (3 times) and each time replaced completely for free. this is why i am so pissed off that i was misled about the availability of an official exhaust upgrade.
and you can bet your bottom dollar that an unofficial exhaust would be used as a get out clause if the engine went pop, even if it was unrelated. although technically you could always swap back to standard before taking said popped engine back…
re: insurance stage2 offered zero performance increase and did not increase my premiums.

Just read Exigeboys experience with an official lotus aftermarket exhaust and ask yourself the same question
actual design fault - a weld on the main bracket on the exhaust kept failing… welded once, replaced twice. Characterised by a ‘tizz’ at about 4k rpm.
So there couldn’t have been any long term testing of the product then?
almost certainly not. A bit like the Exige, actually
well just to close this thread - i’m now top of list for the new S version of the exhaust when its released (allegedly in April). Still a bit pissed that this happened in the first place, but not fuming anymore.
oh and the standard exhaust really does sound like some kind of wet fart. I cant believe the car was released with it. Shocking.
so the sealer wasn’t prepared to throw in anything extra by way of apologising to you?
nope.
I’ve got an S on order for a March 1st delivery from Merritts and have specced a stage 1 exhaust - I understood there were 2 upgrades but that the second one could be a bit too noisy at certain tracks.
Having read this thread, am I right in thinking there is currently no upgrade available and that presumably me dealer has ordered a standard exige upgrade?

correct. chances are if it is fitted the welds will not hold and it will have to removed.
I spoke to Lotus Sport today to get the official verdict on the sports exhaust for the ‘S’.
Firstly, Lotus will not uphold the warranty on the engine with a non Lotus exhaust fitted.
Secondly, it looks like the Lotus sports exhaust will be available sooner rather than later; the end of March or the beginning of April. I couldn’t get an answer as to specs but it looks like there will be a stage 1 and 2.
Cheers.
good good good.
warranty has nothing to do with Lotus sport
and they always hold fast and never like any 3rd party product which is why i dont by any thing from them these days.
Stage 2 will be to loud for track days also i bet.
I was up at Hethel yesterday seeing mine being built and asked James Haskey if he knew anything (I’ve got mine spec’ed with a stage 1) - he didn’t seem to know very much on the issue but mentioned some testing of a Janspeed system. I’m still in the dark but Merritts won’t now fit the new exhaust until the 1K service by which time hopefully it will have been sorted.
Cheers
