Unless your continuously doing track days at banked circuits like (old) Monza, your just modding for the sake of modding, there are already baffles in a standard sump, and your just pandering to the manufacturer’s of these items, a waste of money IMHO
I have had some thoughts about that. I’ve got a bit of time to decide as the car isn’t booked in for another couple of weeks, but I thought oil starvation was a problem for these cars with the AO48s and long corners. I go to Bedford a fair bit and I think turn 2/3 could be a problem.

No baffles in any standard Toyota 2zz sump I have removed?
Podger talks sense, you’ll probably not need it. Ensure you check your oil levels rgularly.(sorry Dave, you won’t be able to feed the kids this weekend)
As for catch cans being a PITA to check, not these that I got from sector111: http://www.sector111.com/track/highly-recommended/catch-cans.cfm
They disconnect in seconds
Every time I mod my car to make it faster or lighter whatever…I take a step back in weight saving doing something I think is safer for the car. Like a Gpan or Accusump, new radiator and so on… At least I have piece of mind and if the worst should happen, well shit happens but I’d be well pissed off if the worst did happen and I hadn’t done anything to prevent it because of Internet forum say so. That’s just all IMO of course…
I put the G-Pan (I think it was G-Pan, I bought it from Dave) on my car just before Spa, I had been chatting with Randy and he mentioned he blew a Toyota engine up there a few months previously, so better safe than sorry I thought. A baffled sump is a lot cheaper than a new bottom end!!
He’s also an experienced GroupC racer (his dad owns a few), the leading driver in the Elise Trophy Series in its first three years, & has developed his own successful Europa racecar (new shape!).
Each has its own benifits and downsides as far as I can see.
A properly set up accusump should only supply oil to the engine, when the oil pressure starts to drop off - basically as soon as the pressure in the engine is lower the cylinder - and if working correctly, that should be 60-70 ish psi. Biggest downside is that there’s only so much in there, and the pressure drops as the oil discharges.
Baffled sump holds more oil, is baffled obviously and should stop the above from happening. No preoiling of the engine when off, but inherently safer to use - no valves, solenoids, procedures to go through when changing oil, etc.
In a ideal world, have both, and a massive red warning light when the accusump starts to discharge!!
In terms of the urban legend bit, there’s enough out there that don’t have any bearings to prove it unfortuanlty.
At the end of the day, pulling sustainted +1g through a corner, is effectivly the same as running the engine lieing on its side, so its only a matter of how much oil is returning to the sump, versus that being picked up before things go wrong. Theres only so many places you can do this - I think everyone excepts that Spa is the worst through the long left at Pouhon, but its certainly not the only place, including a few in the UK that you probably wouldn’t think was so bad.
Its documented in the 2ZZ-GE development papers that the pan was designed to sustain up to 1g side loadin. If your car can produce more than that, it should have the appropriate modifications to mitigate/eliminate the issue. If I am not mistaken, all the baffled sumps offer more total oil capacity which helps when the oil has difficulty draining back.
Not disputing owt else but pulling 1g would only equate to laying the engine at 45 degrees … Draw a force diagram and the resultant vector would be a 45 degree angle not 90 degrees.
Tea break over - get twiddlin them spanners, Mr Garthwaite!
Car going for paint next Thurs or Fri. Injectors to order Monday along with a Syvec and smaller pulley. Talking to Jim about manifold etc etc.
Then its oil cooler for the box.
Already fitted a baffled sump, i ruined my first race engine due to oil starvation, never had the same since, I always have a priooper sump fitted or dry sump if funds and regs allow!!
Each to there own i suppose???
