B16 Honda turbo

Hi Harvey,

thanks for that I didnt mount my camera so had no footage of it on track.

Phil

No worries Phil - as you said a twitchy rear end in the morning!

I found out why the engine would not pull over 3500rpm…

I was not getting anywhere near full throttle so I fixed that then flashed a better map into the ECU. Now it is really starting to move and I actually found myself giggling driving it earlier hmm I need help…

Phil

Phil - can’t wait to see you & mota out on track again

As I guess several of you will of noticed I was back on track again yesterday chugging around in my oil burner. After a scary start using some tyres made of stone the day turned around nicely after spending some money on some new Advans and was a great day with only a few incidents.

I am guessing the car is now somewhere north of 200bhp and really gives a nice smoky shove! Surprising really as this is really just an 8v 100bhp golf estate diesel engine and gearbox with a bigger turbo and injectors.

It was more than a match for several Toyota supercharged cars which really surprised me. Cant wait to get this thing developed some more.

very torquey engine … had a Golf that got “revo’d” for more boost … can imagine a lightweight car with all that torque would be nice , tall gears a must

Yeah I need a taller ratio box but I dont know what else there is. I dont want to go for a 6 speed because of the weight penalty. Currently it really only feels quick in the higher gears because the lower gears are disposed of too quickly.

At Donny it was pretty pointless using 3rd unless someone got in my way. 4th from 2500rpm to 5000rpm was great and pulled really well.

Lol , just like my 500 bhp tractor unit driving without a trailer … still got 12 gears ,but, only really need 2 !!

loads of 5 speed gearbox choice. i have a box at home the is good for 186mph and i am sure there are even longer ones that would do over 200 on a petrol engine revving to 7.5k

i dont have my code sheet with me as i am currently on a beach, but a quick google on 02J gearbox codes should sort you out.

I have a 02A with a Peloquin LSD up for grabs, was rebuilt a while ago for a ABF turbo project but never turned a wheel.

Just on with a few long overdue improvements as it has been largely untouched since I first threw this conversion together…

I am now fitting a pro alloy intercooler after my chargecooler as it is now beginning to struggle since the boost pressure has been pretty much doubled to 2 bar. At Donnington the intake temps were going so high that after a few laps the ecu was winding back the boost to 1.5 bar and reducing fuelling. Hopefully with this setup it should keep things in check and allow quite a bit more fuel to be added whilst keeping egt down.

Up until now the intake has been behind the engine so I am going to extend the intake to get a cold air feed which should also help a little.

I have been mocking up the setup with a few bits I had lying around this afternoon… It is amazing how many things you have to change and move just to add one small part! I have had to move the ecu, fuel filter, chargecooler water pipes, lots of wiring including engine earth strap. Its all a mess at the minute :frowning:

Intercooler with guides to help air through the core, you can also spy my little gaz gold pro’s

Phil

My little diesel on track…
