Anyone tried Castrol Edge 10-60 ?

Just had my Exige S serviced (12 months old) and they put Mobil 1 in it. This is 0-40 and I think its too thin for the Toyota lump - there’s now more valve train noise than before the service!!

I don’t know what oil went in at the first service (1000 miles) but Lotus did it themselves so should have been good stuff.

Anyway, my question is: I’m thinking of dropping the pissy Mobil 1 out and replacing with a decent viscosity; either Mobil 1 10-50 MotorSport formula, or maybe Castrol Edge 10-60. I used to use Castrol RS (10-60) full synthetic and found it to be absolutely superb.

Opinions gratefully received…

Cheers,
Eric

i use a shell racing 10/60…
my lotus garage wanted to put 10/40 in it i said no way!

Nice one Matt. I really should have specified the oil me thinks (next time definitely).

Its a stock engine, Toyota would never design it to take a 60wt oil, it would hit fuel consumption far too much. The big ends should be fine on a 40 wt.

The concerning thing with the 2ZZ is the marginal oiling on cornerning. I use Silkolene Pro S 5W40 purely because it has high concentraions of molybdenum which coats everything and protects it during boundary conditions.

All Lotus dealers in Switzerland use and recommend Castrol 10w60 RS oil. Never had a problem.

FWIW I use 10W40 on the 2ZZ MR2 and ambient temps here are over 35deg right now. I have the docs for the engine and IIRC it was designed to take a 5W30 oil.

That’s interesting. The main Castrol website also recommends 10-60 for Elise R and all Exiges fitted with the Toyota 1.8 VVTL engine.

However, just to confuse matters, they recommend 0-30 for the Toyota Celica 190!!! Hmmmm.

Just checked and the dealer has used Shell helix 5-40 at my last service.

hmm, 10w60 sound like a nice oil!

I had 15w50 from Plans a few weeks ago, am slightly concerned that it wont be so great for winter, 10-60 would probably be btter. Then again I’ve read that oils with such a wide viscocity rating contain a high percentage of polymers that can leave deposits in the engine. Then again BMW use it on the M3 and M5…

edit:

ps, 0w40 and 5w30 just sounds plain wrong for an Exige??Maybe if you never went over 5000 rpm or were using it in well below freezing conditions but otherwise 0w40 is totally unnecessary and 5w30 just sounds really bad for the engine?

Well, I’ve bought a tub of Mobil 1 Motorsport formula (15-50) - just need to drop it in now.

Should be able to use my mate’s garage pit. Makes the job sooooo much easier.

Full synthetics naturally lend themselves to decent viscosity ranges. However, I must admit that 10-60 is one hell of a range and thats another little reason why I opted for the rather more conservative 15-50.
