Annus horribilis [NLC]

[Warning: Relatively unmanly philosophical post follows…]

Hi,

Long time no speak!

Well 2013 sucked.

Things professionally had been challenging for some time (still are) but throw in a spot of cancer followed by a bout of glandular fever combined with back spasms and I am very glad to see the end of last year.

The thing with cancer, however small (but I guess they all start that way and I’m just lucky that’s all mine had the chance to get), is that most of your focus (or mine at least) seems to go on making informed decisions on treatment options rather than on what you really enjoy. So I spent a lot more time last year learning about the lymphatic system and tumour ingress measurements than on things like the latest/greatest shocks (if 42mm was the thing in 2012, what was last year?) and ways of cooling a supercharger (seriously Ben, gold nuts!).

The time also made me focus far more on my direct family, which if the year had a positive that was it. However, understandable as it may be, I neglected my Lotus family. In fact I think I neglected my Lotus after it’s JSR TLC treatment the previous year.

But now, with a clean bill of health (yay!), it’s time to get out of the rut I’ve got in to and get back on with my life. So! Last weekend I checked I could (post-op) comfortably wear my harness again, wiped down the stale interior, warmed it up for half an hour or so and really enjoyed heading off on my first run for many many weeks. On sunny dry roads (and with a game of rugby to enjoy on my return) I had a big smile on my face. Then…then I truly became a Lotus owner again. Yes, you guessed it, it broke.

It hadn’t been so long that I had become unaware that white smoke billowing from the rear wheel is a bad thing. A few cursory checks as to why (swerve a bit, brake, squirt of juice, etc) and I pulled over. It was ‘bleeding’, see below (and yes, I know, the paint work ‘measles’ isn’t pretty either)…

I had only got a mile from home.

As the gauges told me I had some oil pressure left (about the same amount there usually is at tickover) I elected to try and get it back on v.low revs, which I believe I managed without damage to the engine. All that I am hoping has happened is that the filter/seal has corroded (you see, it’s been a tad damp round my way lately) and given way and essentially forced an oil change service on me, albeit a messy one. I’ll learn that shortly.

Until it’s fixed I shall endeavour to undertake the standard ‘winter’ Lotus ownership regime of reading the board.

I’m not after sympathy (well, perhaps for the bloody car’s behaviour; bad car!), just an explanation of my absence and (hopefully  ) welcoming back in to the fold.

So, what’s been going on? I can then have more informed conversations at Anglesey!

Cheers, Ian

Great to hear from you mate, but not about your annus!

Keep yer pecker up, just as you have done over the last year, & we all look forward to seeing you again in Anglesey :sunglasses:

Best wishes

Unkle P

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes Ian, and the car will be an easy fix

Bloody hell Ian must have been awful and really feel for you mate but great that all now ok.

You didn’t expect to go for a uneventful run after it hadn’t been used for so long did you. but sure it will be soon all good to go and running well for Anglesey.

Lots to catch up with here, Foxy Bingo has an S1 and Shrek has a new home

One has to be chilled out to be an S1 owner by default but having been through what you have then this is small potato.

Great to hear a successful outcome and you are getting back to a normal life.

Great news that you can put that behind you, must have been rough on you and family.

Great thing about Lotus ownership is you can tuck it away when you want to, and come back to it when you’re ready. Be it with the odd surprise. That looks like a ton of cleaning, and I can recommend FE10 amberklene for getting the oil off chassis, just keep it clear of the paint.

2013 for me, well you were there for my bad luck. 10 months later, first trackday out and I’m put into the armco by another chequebook racer testing on a trackday. meh.

I did however have a little girl, that kinda overshadowed any bad stuff.

I’m so glad to see this thread. Welcome to the survivors club mate! Any time you wanna chat, let me know. I know exactly how you feel.

Shame about the car but it’s easier to fix than your body.

I’m really looking forward to seeing you at Easter.

Well done.

Did Steve just call me Foxy Bingo… :astonished: True though I do indeed now own an S1, S2 & S4

Ian, glad you’re back, really am mate. Nuff said :sunglasses:

Hi Ian, great to hear from you. And wonderful news on the health front. Hope all oil gets cleaned up and sorted for Angelsey. There are S1s in new hands as you’ll have gathered and the Register is adding cars by the week, so much to catch up on!

Great to hear from you Ian. Brilliant news on the clean bill, now get that car clean and sorted for Easter. Great you are back.

I can only echo the above comments. Welcome back Ian

Ah great to hear from you Ian … very pleased everything sorted for you …
Bummer about the oil leak though !! - filter loose or hose come adrift ? … anyhow … nice opportunity to show off the Speedlines

Good to hear from you Ian, all the best mate. Be great to catch up soon.

Great to hear from you, but not under such circumstances. Good luck with all that cleaning. Looking forward to seeing you again at Anglesey. Very best wishes.

Ahh, you guys. Thanks for the well wishes.

I shall try and gen up on woes (muu :frowning: ) and wows (is that a full-house jonny?!).

JSR John had a quick look today and having put some oil in it thinks it may just be the filter and it didn’t make a horrific noise when we started it. Still, they’ll be a bunch of cleaning up needed. Now, which filter remover to use?..

Never failed

Woohoo, IDG is back :sunglasses:

We missed you mate, great to have you back around and I look forward to chasing you down at Anglesey

Oh btw, I have some Rimstocks that are not covered in oil,…so if you want to swap for your manky old Speedlines just let me know,…you know because not been very well 'n that

Do I sense that in my absense the value of my lightweight, magnesium wheels with a rare specification from the original Motorsport Elise programme, that I arranged the last ever successful production batch of, have risen in desirability/value?

[And the dimbles in its band match my paint work!]
