am i breaking law?

a row has erupted between me and my next door neighbour of 5 years who said to me tonight, rich your car is too loud
i use it as a daily runner to and from work its a noisy s1 exige with a decatted janspeed
it starts up at quarter to seven and comes home just after 5 they say im breaking the law starting such anoisy car up before 7am
any ideas what it measures on the db
failing this i could start it up at 7 which isnt breaking the law and be less courteous in how long it takes for me to get it out of the garage!

opinions please

Don’t think you’re breaking any law as yet, but do you really want to cause problems with neighbours, & possibly yourself if the local council become involved in monitoring noise levels?

Why don’t you just fit a decent silencer eg 2bular, instead of the Janspeed which is not exactly the best in many respects? Everyone would be a winner then!

Good luck, & hope it works out for everyone

There are definately laws on exhaust noise from cars, not sure what they actually are, but the testing is strictly controlled. I’m with Pesky though just fit a silenced decat or a hole new setup from Jim

Have a look on there. It’s all a little ambiguous really. A silenced cat replacement pipe will help you if you’re concerned. Always worth remembering that too much noise would prohibit you from track days etc too.

As MrP says love your neighbour  - my Janspeed is a tad noisy, but my neighbours bike is louder so I have no issues

its quite difficult to enforce by the old coppers. but they could get it decibel tested. a few of my scooby friends have had this done.but tbh i dont know any that have been reported for them being too loud…at the end of the day its a sports car …

depends how much you like your neighbours. i cant imagine its that loud, probably just loud for them and waking them up…id probably just ignore them, but thats me…

is it track friendly in its current state??? if it is, then id ignore them or ask them politely to feckin move house…

Think calmly & sensibly about this, before waging war with neighbours!

Have you recently seen the typical questionnaire you are obliged to complete when selling a property eg neighbour disputes?

We all know that a decatted/Janspeed silencered Exige S1 is bloody loud - especially early doors, or late at night!

Good luck, & keep calm!

I have a stainless silenced decat pipe if you need one. Your’s for 50.

Dan

Take a leaf out of good old Con’s book and push the car out the drive and down the road before starting it.

that my friend is a brilliant answer, and one a true gentleman would do…

problem solved…

I have a silenced de-cat pipe on an Eliseparts (Simpson) system and it does not appear to make a whole heap of difference, especially on starting up. So maybe see if you can borrow one to try first if you are going down that route.

Be careful what you do with the neighbours as although you may get away or be technically in the clear with the noise, a de-catted S1 will fail emissions/road side testing and thus you could be reported/prosecuted for this.

Do that myself as well if I am leaving early for some track action, helps my close by neighbors, sod the rest of them

Yeah pissing your neighbours off never ends well. Although in fairness I dont think I have ever heard a quiet S1 start up early in a morning.

My bog standard catted and exhausted S2 is bloody loud echoing out of the garage at 6:45am.

I reckon if you could roll it out of the garage and start it in the road you would gain some “effort” points from your neighbours.

Its been said already, but piss them off enough and you will get dobbed in for a car that is driving illegally without a CAT.

I had problems with the neighbours with my last 2 Fezza’s - both had dcat straight through exhausts on and needed warming before driving - not happy n’bours at 6am on a Sunday morning !!!

On the plus side they did spit flames and sound epic

On bad days !!!

On bikes it’s an MOT check , to ensure that the silencer ( or Can ) meets British Standard and has label , and also allows the police to check at the roadside.

I used to buy labels from the small ad’s in MCN , which passed muster on two police pulls !! Even though it was quite clear that the can was empty and was full of FA!!

I’ve grown up now ( just) …and luckily have no near neighbours

Plod could i suppose issue a section 59 warning, get a second one in the next 12 months and the car will be impounded!!
Not sure if they will or can do it for a noisy exhaust but is it worth the risk?

I recall in a bygone age Plod used to have an 18" ruler that they used to shove up motorbike exhausts - if it went all the way - you were nicked for removing the silencing material! - my mate’s Velocette constantly fell foul of this rudimentary check

Halcyon days
