Alternative track day car

As our beloved S1’s are becoming so valuable???!! what alternative car would you use for trackdays if you decided to mothball the Exige??[
One suggestion but may be more valuable! Good colour though.

If you want an honest reply, BMW M3. I drive a BMW normally and…hate it…Exige is better in the snow but. 8 year old M3 is cheaper than an Elise S1, take out the interior, room inside for a spare set of wheels, sell the old interior to a CHAV and you are away. Unburstable engine, good chassis, rwd, powerful brakes…

only downside is…you have to drive a BMW.

That looks great Clive. Lola?

In that Orange it has to be a McLaren CanAM… you thinking of buying Clive?

They’re out of my budget, but I’ve always wanted a KTM X-Bow, despite the general concensus that alternatives like the 2-eleven are much, much better.

McLaren M8 (M8A?) in Can Am Trim circa 1968 if I’m not mistaken (although this is obviously a much more modern photo).

McLaren Can Am you are right.
Taken at last years Tasman Revival…My ears are still ringing.

Alternative car…MX5 ??

Stripped E46 M3, bought an SMG E46 for 8k last week, lot of car for the money and you know an SMG has never been over revved. once a couple of hundred kilos are removed it’ll be ideal

I’ve been giving thought to a winter car after seeing that picture of Sean in his Scooby…keep it coming

Buy a “new” old style Mk1 BBR MX5 turbo for 7.5k. With 220bhp, rwd and light weight plus fresh paint in your choice of colour (orange or isotope green obviously) and re upholstered seats, etc it’s amazing value. Evo mag rate it 5 stars in this months edition. After owning an N/A one years ago and loving it I cant think of anything else for the same money or then again for a few quid more as good for tracking. Something like this you could really push on track too as when you do have an off the body panels are dirt cheap.

If it were me I’d be seriously tempted to get an tintop ex-racer. My original thinking was that there are a load of well developed E36 M3’s etc out there. Using this as an excuse for a bit of pistonheads classified browsing I had a quick look and found something that changed my mind…

Now this would be a proper trackday weapon, ok running costs may be a bit on the high side but nobody would dare get in your way as you played out your Aussie V8 fantasy

Clicky

Clive, bear in mind you have a trailer, you could do much worse than a Clio Cup race car. Even a brand spanker is less than 30K

Yeah love my scooby. Great for winter / wet track days. It isn’t worth much, it goes pretty well (300bhp) its 4wd with a variable centre diff, so will go from being a Mk2 Escort to a 50/50 split locked diff at the twit of a button(it was awesome in the snow). The suspension and brakes are now well sorted and I have had it remapped. I actually had anti lag and launch control enabled on it today!!!

I basically wanted something I could drive too a trackday in air conditioned comfort, have a good hoon around during the day and then drive home, and so far it has done exactly that.

Next outing, Oulton park on the 29th

Air conditioned comfort, jeesh, soft bloody brummies

I remember the days when I could do that in my Exige!

Kinda can now, just without the A/c (aka Lotus front ballast).

Ian

Just picked up a Jag XJR - supercharged 6 cylinder for a song to go with the V12 XJS and the Exige!

Would love to try that one out on a track even though it is Auto.

After owning several different flavours of impreza over the years I couldnt agree more. The ultimate do it all car. Mine never broke down, went just as quick on a wet road as dry and always, always left me giving it the nod of approval when walking away from it after a good drive in the lanes.
One day when i can afford a 6 bay garage and the cars to fill it I’ll have another hawk eye Spec C in bay 2, after the exige of course in bay 1.

No its a Ford Fiesta for me …watch this… WOW
