Airbox / throttlebodies questions

Got round to getting the airbox off the car today, and noticed that the plate that holds the trumpets on and the airbox to the car is rusty and the paint is flaking off.

Is this part of the filter assembly, if I buy a new ITG or similar big filter will it come with a new plate? I cant find anywhere that sells them online with pics to see what you get. I dont think it does come with a new plate but wanted to check, also is it OK to just undo all the allen key bolts to get the trumpets and plate off to get the rust off?

At the moment the filter is at the end of the ducting (which was placed down towards the undertray, not at the hole in the side of the car) so is it best to leave it as-is (filter is clean now) and get the plate powdercoated or sand it and hammerite it? Should I switch the cone filter in the ducting for a big one that goes in the airbox?

I dont have an oil catch tank, at the moment it vents back into the airbox, is this a worthwhile thing to do (there was a fair bit of oily gunk in the airbox)

I have an ITG on mine, you get the back plate with it when you buy one.

Got a nice shiny new red one with mine.

Just be careful when putting them back on again. I have heard of a few with loose bolts, so it might be worth putting a light threadlocking sealant on them on reassembly.

I think you will get opinions both ways, personally i would place the filter as close to the airbox as possible. That way any hole in the trunking will not let unfiltered air into the engine. Better still the ITG solution…

Definitely yes, although you would be best getting the full breather kit hose set from Lotus and then the oil catch tank can be got from any number of places.

Thanks for the replies so far, very helpful.

This might be a daft question, but I take it the actual filter element of the ITG is seperate to the back plate and it is held in place but the fixings between the airbox and the plate?

I will get the catch tank parts looked out and fitted over winter at some point.

This also might be a daft question, but how is the airbox removed ?

There are two nuts visible on the top part of the box, are there two on the underside also? - if so, how the hell do you get to them ??

There are two on the underside in the same relative position as the top two.

Remove the aluminium panel which is 90 degree to the “boot floor” - just unscrew the fixings at either side - and with that out of the way you should be able to get to the bolts at the bottom easier

Thanks Andy…that’s how it ‘looked’ but I thought that getting to the underside ones would be pretty damn impossible…
