I have found a gauge that might give me what I need, however it only uses the narrowband pickup on the installed sensor, is that a good idea?

Nah, narrow bands sensors are pretty much useless outside their tiny operating range. You’re much better off geting an Innovate gauge http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/g3_gauge.php
