Can anyone offer some advice on air filters/induction for a 190 converted K series in my S1 Exige. I’m not up on the techy side but I understand that heat is a big issue both on the engine and in the bay. Is it preferable to fit an after market induction kit in place of the existing box and air filter? If so would a conical or some other alternative filter be the best choice and should I be looking at a direct feed from the side air intake of the car (I mean be getting the pipe or filter to receive as much air as possible) or back it away from the intake in the bodywork a bit to allow some of the cold air in to cool the engine bay a little as well? Any and all views would be appreciated, if anyone has pic’s of their conversions so that I can grasp the basics that would be
I should say also that I plan on changing the engine cover to the motorsport version in a month or three but for now I still have the original polycarbonate one.
You can get an adapter that fits onto the side intake vent so you can attach the induction hose, but that’s not entirely necessary. All you need is to secure the hose close to the vent so the outside cold air is fed into the ducting.
The other end goes onto the airbox (in the 192 conversion) with a single witches hat type filter between the two.
I’m sure someone else will be able to provide a picture, but mine’s all in bits at the moment.
I am led to beleive that PTP developed or helped to develop the K series engine in the Exige, I’m not sure if that is a good thing or bad? Do you have this intake fitted to your car Fiona? wondering if it’s as good as it’s price tag says it should be
I had one of these fitted to my S1 (now DaveP’s) and no issues. Wasn’t convinced it made a difference when fitted to the running but as it goes in the airbox I thought would be better at stopping any crap getting ito engine. I bought it at lotus show at donny 2 yrs ago and the guy on stand said this was what the S1 was spec’d to have had but lotus cut back to save costs and fitted the cone unit. For the 120 it cost not sure worth it other than for piece of mind of better filtering. Steve
I can’t see that the ITG does anything different than the normal filters. ITG sits in the box (?maybe disrupts airflow to the trumpets?) and the hat sits infront of the airbox.
I have a spare hat filter if you’re looking for one.
Standard filters are crap. When I bought my car it had done 28k miles and the filter had quite a bit of damage on it and was quite clogged up.
It sits too close to the air intake on the side scoop so gets hit by stones etc. The ITG was originally developed for the Exige but Lotus took the low cost option of the witches tit.
Whether there is any performance improvement I’m not sure as mine was fitted at the same time as all the tappets were re-done and a set of new exhaust valves were fitted, so lots of changes at the same time.
But from piece of mind it’s better than sticking with the standard unit.
Also not sure why people think it’s expensive, at 140 it’s cheaper than a hurricane and on a car with DTHTB’s it’s the correct type of filter to fit. As for turbulance when compared to a standard single filter, it will allow a more even airfolw into the TB’s and doesn’t cause any restriction like a single one will, as it has a much larger surface area.
I don’t see why you think they’re crap Mark. Mine’s been totally fine and doesn’t get hit by anything. It’s not located next to the air intake, it’s right in the neck of the airbox.
Thanx for your input Steve and Mark, I’m sure the ITG and the one Lotus chose to fit have their merrits. I’m also sure the standard fit is more than adequate for the job but it’s nice to see that the ITG seems to have been the engineers choice when designing the Exige before that was changed by Mr. Purse-strings For me, I’m not necessarily looking for more power (though if it happens thats a bonus), it’s simply that I have heard the standard air filter may not be the best.
I can’t see myself going down the honda or audi conversion route, for one thing the cost is too prohibitive for me, besides I am more than happy with what I have but I do want to make changes by upgrading certain things that may have been done to a budget by Lotus. I think that the price for the ITG is a little high but still worth the expense if it’s the right way to go. I’d like to see what other owners have fitted as well, I’m sure these 2 options aren’t the only ones available.
No argument from me on the cool looks rating of the ITG kit… Does that make me shallow too Have to see what else is available first though, before I commit

Hmmm, lots of answers here on looks only…
I guess you’ll find out the ITG on top of the trumpets will lose you power, just becasue it’s too close to the trumpet’s mouth (interference and all that).
The original Pipercross are excellent. I have made power runsd with the Pieprcross and a top spec K&N, and the K&N lost power.
The only thing I would make sure is that the filter is close to the box, not at the end of the trunking, where it can get damaged.
Also, make sure it’s serviced. Go to Pipercross site and buy the special cleanaing fluid and oil. Never wash it with petrol or use it without the special oil.
Like this, it should last forever and besides, you may even have two of them! (originally there were two to calm down drive by noise)

Thank you Uldis, so the Lotus fitted option is as good as any That’s peace of mind and money saved. i’ll certainly look at getting the cleaner and oil you suggested and give the filter(s) a regular detox I haven’t had the airbox off yet so don’t know if I will have 1 or 2 of the filters. In any case I’ll find out hopefully by the weekend.
Also remember to make the end of the trunking pick up cold air from the scoop.
You can do this by adding an extension to the trunking (it’s normally too short) with whatever you can find.
Members her have done it in a variety of ways, from CF tube you can buy at reverie or the likes to B&Q plastic pipe (me) to a plastic plant pot!
You’ll feel the engine revving out much smoother with the cold air intake.

Any pics Uldis ?..might try this at the weekend too…
Does it not help to have some of the cold air into the engine bay ?
I replaced the whole air trunking with a section of this sort of stuff:- clicky The silver stuff is double layer(despite the description on the site)and also reflective so minimises any heat absorbtion from the engine bay too. 1 metre is (slightly) more than enough and it allows you to keep the standard filter too. Dont’t worry about taking too much air from the left duct, air’s still getting in from the NACA ducts underneath and from the roof scoop and right hand duct.
