Air ducts too cool front brakes.

Hi,

Thinking of cutting out the fake air ducts in the front and channel some air to the front brakes. Anybody done this on their car? Care to share some pic’s? What diameter hose did you use? Is there an oval type hose which will fit the whole gap?

cheers

Loads of us have done this. Can’t remember the ducting diameter*. Don’t forget that you’ll need to make a hole through the arch liner.

  • But I bet Mr Bean does!

Hi Rene …on Pesky’s car the hose is about the same dia as the flat back part of the fake duct.
Its fitted or held in place by simple silicone mastic.
BUT I saw somewhere that it is questionable if it is necessary especially as I know on other cars it contributes to excessive disc wear as it shoots all the road dirt on the the disc which is not very helpful. But I might be wrong.
Cheers

search for posts from Uldis - he went down this route several years ago and posted quite a bit of interesting information.

Oooo, yes, found it. I had been searching on SELOC but apparently not the right words

Here it is, very nice job indeed.

I’n not sure yet if I should channel the air to the disc’s or just have the air going in to the wheel housing. I also heard from a aerodynamics friend that if you have a too big scoop and funnel the air into a too small hose the effect will be zip zero at a certain speed. So I guess as big hose as possible will do it.

Thanx, Clive, hadn’t thought of the dirt-part of the story. That’s interesting. I see Uldis has some mesh to keep the big pieces out How was SPA? I hope to get my car back soon so I can show you why I couldn’t come. You gonna like it

There is no anecdotal evidence (that I am aware of) that it is a problem, & there are a lot of regulars on here with the same set up as me (another Lotuspower modification!). Most of the cars that ran in the “Mid Engined Series” didn’t even have wheel arch liners.

Uldis did a very fine job on his car, but I wonder if the time/effort/expense is worthwhile for others to do the same?

Rob…A good friend tracks a Nissan 350z in canada and has had a lot of probs with this mod on his car …maybe its all the road grit they use there but I know he has gone through several sets of discs since doing the chop job.

RENE what have you done ??? cant wait to see

Can’t comment on the Canadian/350Z situation, but in 73K miles, I’ve worn out 2 sets of front rotors, & am now on my third (being the first set of APs for me). I’ve never experienced a problem with the braking*, either on the road or track, since fitting braided hoses/decent pads & fluid, after the initial 5K miles, & 6 months of ownership.

Can only state my own Exige experience, & knowledge of the the experience of others with a similar set up

  • I’m in the process of sorting “excess” pedal travel on track, since fitting 4 pot APs on the front, & retaining the oem rears, but that’s a different issue altogether

Whether or not it is necessary to open the front vents, is perhaps another discussion. In hindsight for me, it wasn’t necessary, but seemed like a good idea at the time

Well… I directed my ducting direct into the centre of the disc ( after removing the splash sheilds ).

The end of the ducting is tie wrapped to the wishbone and is very close to the disc …

The idea being to put cooler air direct into the centre and let it vent from the periphery, any grit would follow that path and not get on to the surface of the disc so easy as it would just blasted into the wheel arch.

The bells are closed so that no air can escape from the centre …

This follows the advice on the AP website and in my experience makes some difference, they also quote a figure for the duct area and the max size you can get in the false vent is easy big enough.

Of course having done all that the hot air has to escape from the wheel arch, that is another story …

Pesky my memory may be no better than yours but I thought Uldis, or someone else on this posts about his mod, did find issues with road debris getting directly into the disc area.

If you do then block them off for raod use when they are not needed anyhow - Believe thats what Uldis did …

That was only because he couldn’t keep his car on the black stuff!
