Just guessing, but maybe it’s providing Mr Admin with some revenue to fund the running of the website. If that’s the case, it’s difficult to argue against it.
Only ads I get are in the top right.

Funnily, it’s not so much an issue of revenue, since it only makes a few quid per week, but I thought it’d offer up something relevant once Google got it’s mojo together.
We used to carry Ebay ads in a similar way (albeit on the right of the screen) which to some were a bit intrusive, but to others was a great way of seeing what tat… erm I mean, parts were available for their Exige.
David - your efforts here are greatly appreciated, but if you asked me (and I know you didn’t!) I liked the EBay ads better.
It’s your site do what you want, I wish the BBC would follow suit, maybe improve on some of the dross they broadcast…I fear for F1 albeit will not miss the commercials…what the fook am I going on about

I might even suggest a small membership fee because Exige Ownership would not be so enjoyable without exiges.com
