adaptable ECU

i was just chatting with a guy from service at my local dealer, he mentioned i can hook up a laptop to my exige s ecu and moniter all the stats and (if i dare) change them to suit.

has anyone done this?
where can i get the program?
what do i need to connect?

thanks

Dream on!

He’ll be talking about the ODB2 port…

he may well be but no one has cracked the Lotus ECU in the UK so he is not going to make any changes any time soon

Its slowly becoming a requirement that even back street non franchised dealers can have access to the ECU. Up to now this has meant that they can read various paramaters through the canbus but in future the OEMs will have to supply calibration updates to allow cars to be updated by almost any competant garage with suitable service tools. My local back street spanner man can do Renaults and a couple of others at the moment but the list is growing

Whether this gives us the required foot in the door is debatable. The updates will almost certainly be encrytped somehow and even if you did modify it somehow there will also be a watchdog system in there which double checks everything and will just shut it down if something doesn’t add up. On the plus side such a diagnostic tool will have to go through some sort of formal handshake with the ECU to gain access. If you have a canbus logger you may be able to intercept the handshake and re-use it to then suck the hex code out and then decrypt it. The problem is that this handshake could be a huge encrypted algorithm not just a constant hex sequence (Mems uses this system hence why you never see chips for Rover Mems). Its a start though.

thanks for the help…
with these kind of devices i can view the ecu stats but not edit them? or can they be edited with some kind of complicated computer wizard stuff?

Only Lotus, Charlie, Komotec and Bemini seem to be able to reprogram the ECU atm
