Accusump - do you need one for track days?

Trust me, I don’t want to fork out and buy one, but after driving at Spa I was really concerned about the cornering / braking forces on the car, and some of the quick changes in direction.

It had some really long bends and I could just imagine the effect on the oil!

So what’s the general consenus on whether they are needed or not?

Anyone had any oil starvation / cooling issues on track?

Must be some significance in the Lotus 240 / 255 cars having them fitted?

Hi Mark

I have seen various posts on if they work etc but can tell you that they must be doing something 'cause the oil in mine got nice and hot after ‘enthusiastic’ cornering.

With the BHP you now have I would upgrade as much as you can - Brakes, suspension etc.

If you want to avoid potential engine issues down the line an accusump is great insurance. Baffled sumps stop the oil at the bottom of the engine moving around when the real potential issue is up top. Accusump fixes this.

All IMHO (Plus why do Lotus Sport insist on them once over 240bhp ?)

I’ll be getting it done when the supercharger goes in… I can then drive by yours after it breaks down

off to Spain…see ya!

So what do these cost on their own? Been quoted 1300 plus vat fitted so far.

Hi mate,

Is the baffled sump from Hangar111 not a similar but cheaper option?

Boothy

edit, its called a Moroso see link Lotus Elise, Exige, 2-Eleven Parts & Tuning - Hangar 111 <<

Hi Boothy, form the info I have been given, Lotus say the issue isn’t around oil surge its more about it getting stick up in the bores and not returning to the pickup. Seems they have tried and tested baffled sumps and the only solution is the Accusump.

Can’t open your link to see what that one is atm! My PC…

Mark - I paid around 700 for mine plus fitting which is around 4 hrs.

Who did you get quotes from ? - I’d give the factory a try and check for any offers through Lotus Club International

Mark - just seen this on E Bay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Canton-2-Quart-Accusump-Oil-Accumulator-EPC-Valving-Qt_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em63Q2el1177QQhashZitem140258037070QQitemZ140258037070

About 180 quid buy it now !!!

Is that the exact one I need Chris??

According to the blurb they do 2 sizes and the one on the linky is for V8 V6 or 4 cylinder engines

Def worth a enquiry I think - the one on my old car is a 2 Quart unit.

PM me your mail address and I’ll send you the GT details with part no’s (might be Lotus though)

Check this thread out

Just found this

http://www.forcedfed.com/elise/accusump/forcedfed.html

Def Lotus fitment - $529 which is around 280

I guess it’s worth shopping around and enquiring direct.

All look cheaper than UK option by about the costing of fitting

Good Luck and if you take it further let us know - I bet John would be interested

Chris

Suggest that you speak to hangar 111 about the accusump as well as the baffled sump.

Baffled sump doesn’t just benefit from the baffling. It also holds an additional litre of oil so even if it gets stuck in the head, there’s more to play with.

They have also been fitting an accusump for me. Usual story with me, could resist a bargain on ebay, and its been in the garage for a while. Got it from a cup car that was converted to dry sump. Hanger 111 sourced all the ancilaries for me and have done the fitting. They can also source the bottle and valves at a good price.

Feel free to drop my name.

Cheers
Will.

Has anyone got any evidence of oil starvation in the S2? I haven’t heard any going through starvation and you’d normal get forum chatter if it was a regular occurence.

Think there might of been the odd one but I dont think its a regular thing, I am guessing it can be a problem as lotus make a point of fitting them on cup cars but I think you might need the status of ‘DRIVING GOD’ before you actually make use of it

I’m going to stick my head on the line and say the following:

  • The odds of oil starvation happening are slim unless your an Elise Trophy race driver who can pull high G in the bends. I’m not a track day hero but I’m not exactly slow in the twisties even with Nitrons and 255 horses resting on my right foot.
  • I’ve not heard of many Toyota engines going bang other than people buzzing the engine on downshifts and one owner who went through 2 engines driving on 2nd cam everywhere (shall remain nameless).
  • Our engines actually do use oil and the level can drop at random periods so its important you keep checking every now and then. You have to compensate for people who blew their engines and didn’t check their oil regularly.

For the occasional track day or spirited driving I think an accumsump is OTT. If your doing 10+ track days a year and can pedal you probably want to be safe than sorry.
