What are the thoughts about this:
car is an early (54) N/A S2 exige, unmodified.
Yesterday I hit the rev limiter (haven’t done this before, but have had red light on)
There wasn’t any dramatic sounds but revs dropped, car continues to run smoothly, definately on 4 cylinders, but stuttuers and misfires when I’ve tried to accelerate.
Drove home from Lakes ok, 70 on motorway, other than this - no apparent problems.
all views appreciated.
Will take to Ollie at Phoenix if needed.
Thanks
OK, so the car hits the rev limiter and then wont accelerate any more? That’s the whole idea of the rev limiter isn’t it? Have you tried changing gear??
Lol Sean.
No engine light? Did you hit the limiter on an up change or down? Reason I ask is that you could have buzzed it on a down change. I’ve hit the limiter on mine more times than I would like to admit on up changes, no problems related to that as far as I’m aware.
I’m still fearing the worse, so my sense of humour is on hold until I know for sure I haven’t stretched or bent a valve!
Dash light may have come on I wasn’t looking, I was on an up shift into 3rd, just held revs longer than normal on 2nd cam. revs dropped off suddenly, and then drove smoothly up to 3k revs but wouldn’t have any sudden revs above that.
I’ve disconnected battery for 24 hours just in case ECU might benefit from a reboot??
taking to Ollie at Phoenix on Sat to be properly checked out.
Anyone else experienced anything like this?
sorry about my previous lack of sympathy. I wouldn’t of thought you would have damaged anything internally, you say it ticks over OK at the moment? If the belt would have jumped a few teeth and you had bent something, it would run rough all the time. I am wondering if you have had a sensor go down or something?? I guess you have a cable throttle on that car? So it cant need the DBW throttle body re-syncing?
Cheers Sean, I’m hoping it’s something like this too, just been out in it again, after disconnecting battery, still the same, runs as smoothly as ever until sudden tires for accelearation, then splutters. Taking it to Phoenix tomorrow.
Will let you know what it is.
Might be problems with the VVTLi mechanism, low on oil?
Nope…checked before we went away, spot on full and hardly used since service.
Still awaiting Ollies’s full verdict, he phoned me today saying he didn’t think it was anything serious.
Was’nt aware the Toyota engine had a timing belt, thought it was a chain.
Yeah sorry, thats me having a “div” moment. They are happening with more frequency of late.
Thought that only happens with very old pricks like me
well, finally got my car back this week, now all working properly again…thanks to Ollie & Greg at Phoenix - lots of checking out sensors, ECU, mechanics, etc…turned out to be a sticking fuel pump…through, what looks like a lack of use!! - car is only driven for about 3k each year and some years none!
So be warned guy’s,drive it regularly to keep everything working properly
Now going to trade in for S3!
Great news! Use it, like Benja says.
