A048s in the wet!

Hi advise please,

I am off to Snetterton on Friday (novice day) and Rockingham on Sunday, in my S2 S booted with A048s.

I have only done 800 miles in the car and not had the chance to push it in the wet as yet - too scared!

Are the A048s as bad as I suspect in the wet and I am mad to do two track days where the forecast shows wet conditions.

If the answer is yes what tyres would I be better off getting?

The 48s are remarkably good on a wet track - provided you’re gentle with the brakes, throttle & steering input.

Whatever tyres you use on an Exige (apart from pukka wet race tyres), you’ll find it very twitchy through “standing water”.

Take it easy, & you’ll have a great time - your car control will improve, & that’ll be a benefit for road driving in crappy conditions

Does it not need its after sales service at 1000 miles or has this already been done?

I did a Walshy airfield day in the pouring rain with nearly illegal 48s, and was amazed at the grip. They did eventually give up and I couldn’t get any traction in the first 3 gears but early on they were fine. If they are nearly new I am sure you will be fine, just be careful on the way home as the grip on track will be so much better than on our ‘wonderful’ roads.

Phew!

I thought I was going to have to spend the week searching the classifieds for a second set of rims.

Many thanks for the advice Mr Pesky and trust me I will be taking it easy.

Zasker, the car had done 500 miles when I bought it, I’ve since done about 800 in which it had it’s service, so far great apart from having to have the gear box replaced.

Dry brilliant
Damp surprisingly good
Wet passable
Standing water, completely rubbish.

See the Donnington thread here

Nice one Evo

Impressive footage.

IMHO, R888 >>> A048. And that’s in the wet as well as in dry conditions.

What I did notice though that driving around in at 3C is a killer when you have lots of torque. Anything other than extremely careful on the throttle results in no grip at all!!

Evo - noticed the small oval rear view mirror on your YouTube post and it got me thinking;

Is it a legal requirement to have a rear view mirror especially in an S?
If so where did you get yours - mine is a lump of a thing

The mirror is a Sector 111 micro mirror. Got it from Hangar 111 ages ago. Definitely helps forward vis.

In an ‘S’ I’d remove the mirror completely.

A048s are fine in the wet, until you hit a puddle - thats from my experience bombing down the M4 in a downpour

Yep, standing water + A048 = Elvington down the straight + 5 full rotations + no warning + soiled kegs

YEP !!! I think that was the track day i was at, luckily not on AO48’s…
