A strange incident @ Anglesey?

Ignore the “camera date”, this was Monday 2nd May 2011.

Who was that Rob ? Hopefully the ‘bump’ wasn’t too bad?

I dont get it? who is that?

It was a lad from Norlog, Dave, who is not unexperienced.

I’m struggling to figure out what went wrong there, although I think I take a different line through the bend where the back end broke away.

Thoughts, Dave/Sean?

Did he hit the rev limiter which unsettled the rear of the car at exactly the wrong point?

very odd and he was so unlucky to hit that bit of barrier as well :frowning: hope it isn’t too bad

It happened just after he turned in. He does look to be holding the wheel pretty tight, which Walshy days have taught me doesn’t allow the car to help in sorting things out (they want to keep moving forwards). :frowning:

Looks like an S1 Elise too, which would have had lift there rather than downforce. Hard to catch all that weight over the rear axle, which is why they dialed understeer in to the S2.

Ian

I think he lifted too much, it gets light on the bumps, sort of starts to get away and then its too much correction.

Look at this thread for almost identical situation

Im off to look how I take that corner now !!

It is indeed an S1 (a nice one too), Ian. It is a well sorted car geo/suspension wise, & also benefits from an “Edwards” splitter on the front.

Bad news man. Who knows what happens, these things just do, momentary lapse in concentration, or one or more of the above.

Hrm…it’s very similar to the line that I take through there… and I have to say I’ve never felt the back end even get the slightest bit light there.

Hard to tell from the video and without seeing what he was doing hands and feet wise.

I don’t think he hits the limiter, the engine revs seem to drop as he begins the turn.

Could be a case of braking into the turn causing the back end to break away, once it had, he was too late catching it and over-corrected. It’s a strange place to be braking though…

What was the drivers report Rob? His lines elsewhere looked pretty decent (banked hairpin looks a bit weird) and he looks quite smooth.

Looks a nice car - hope the damage wasn’t too bad! :frowning:

Straight from the horse’s mouth:

[color:#000099]Cheers for the comments guys, i still think there was oil on the track although a few peeps thought i was using that as an excuse but i did see a marshal with the oil warning flag after the shunt on my way round back to the pits. at first i thoght i’d lifted of the gas or gone to deep into the corner but looking at the vid it doesn’t seem that way. oh well not to much harm done. had a good check over this morning an apart from a worn ball joint all is ok. the knock i had when nearly home has gone and all i can think of is it was something in one of debs bags trying to escape

Very odd place for an accident. That corner is flat in an Exige isn’t it? Delighted to hear car and driver both OK though - it’s not a slow place for an accident…

looking @ the video i would of said oil as well as i could not see him doing anything wrong

Looks like he lifted off the accelerator a bit at the same time as having some right hand side steering input. I think Elises are far more unforgiving than Exiges under such conditions.

Agreed having now watched it with some audio. You’d think that I’d watched it on my phone in a meeting

Oil seems unlikely though…as the front would have washed out rather than the back…Marshall was maybe flagging for his car in case he was dropping some after the incident?

The front obviously had enough grip to make it around the corner, so I’m still sticking with my ‘too much brakes on turn in’ theory

I think he lifted, as a wise man once said FLAT.

Spooky - had almost exact same incident on that corner on my final Angelsey lap - back end stepped out massively as if something had given on back end - couldn’t find anything wrong with Exige so have put it down to driver error - interesting…

Aero balance, that’ll be it! Shouldn’t joke, glad Dave is okay about it all.
