A better alternator for a lotus

Hi,

We’ve had someone come onto our site asking for a new alternator for their lotus, does anyone have any ideas where I could get it?

Theyve said the following:

Fact 1
Works in my Lotus Exige S1 (VHPD K-series engine)
Fact 2
Survives trackdays (8000rpm alot!) without expiring
Fact 3
Doesn’t cost stupid money (has to be less than 500, standard one is under 200)
Fact 4
Can be fitted by any Lotus mechanic

Any ideas?

Much appreciated!

I think Brise do one, but sorry, don’t know the model number. (Available from… cough, Demon Tweeks)

SeanB/DVA are probably the best peeps to come up with a definitive answer.

If you do a search on this forum (posts within last 5 years!) for “Brise”, the answer may available.

I only have bad experiances with Brise alternators, so I got a friuendly local scrap guy to sort me K series alternators for 10 in the end.

A bigger pulley on the alternator or smaller on the crank is a good start to get it spinning slower. QED do these as far as I can remember.

Then you need a good heatshield and wrap the exhaust, plus get some cold air from the side pod blowing on it.

It is heat that kills them, from both over speeding them and from the exhaust that is so close.

Nice one Sean - thought you’d used a Brise on your K

QEDs pulley is smaller but doesn’t have the rubber bit on it. So Lakeside enquired if this could potentially create resonance in the oil pump/crank. They thought QED’s stuff was pretty good though.

Any thoughts?
