Saw an Itialian chap in a 240 at Spa this year with 4’s on the front and his old 2’s (possibly his old 2’s as he couldn’t speak a word of English )on the rears.
What are the pro’s and con’s in doing this and what new parts are needed etc…? Is it a massive labour job?
No handbrake…unless you fit a separate caliper. Avoid the Eliseparts “Hi Spec” version incorporating hand brake operation (in fact, I think it was dropped by Geary, after problems in the 1st year of LOT racing, when various peeps had them sticking on).
I believe that problem has been sorted now though with a slight design change. Steve G runs them on his time attack car, so they must be o.k. Scuffham also runs them.
I’ve just done this and am going to fit a hydraulic handbrake, although my car will be purely race car next year. If it were a road car, I would fit the Hi Spec ones.
You may also require different uprights or to machine your current ones to get the calipers to fit. You would also have to change your master cylinder and perhaps fit a bias valve to fine-tune things as I’ve just discovered.
Unless the Hi Spec 2 pot calipers are a re-design, I wouldn’t touch them - Randy/Walshy/RussT all had big problems with them sticking on. Benja took a fantastic photo of Russ’s car at Snetterton, with the rear discs glowing red hot
Yep, the oem 2 pots (from the front) can be fitted with a bit of work, & will be great on a pure race/track car, but will need an auxiliary caliper for the handbrake in order to pass the MOT. If there is a “quick fix” in fitting the oem front calipers, & retaining a handbrake, please let me know as that’s a set up I want!
Really not needed ihmo… Standard set up is more than adequate for road, track and race. Biggest challenge I’ve found with driving these type of cars is just how little time you actually need to be on the brakes… Less brakes = More speed carried. Just have a play with disc and pad combo’s til you find one that works for you…
I would like a similar setup as well but can’t afford to be without the handbrake, my issue with the standard rears is the amount of flex in them the pads and discs wear unevenly due to the bow in them when used on track, I have only had this since moving to the 4 pots up front I’m not sure why it is only now happening but it certainly was very eveident when my rears were changed before Spa.
Yep, well this is it as I can’t think of anymore that 5ish times in 3 years I’ve used the handbreak. The MOT thing could be an issue but saying that I am actually quite happy with my set up, I’d just never seen it on a car before. Mmm it adds weight also I guess.
At the front there will be a tiny bit more weight because your going from a 2 to a 4 pot caliper. However, at the back there is quite a big weight saving as the original steel calipers weigh a tonne. I’ve probably saved around 6 kg at the rear I reckon.
One other reason I’ve gone for this setup, is that I was getting through pads quite quickly spending the whole day out on track, probably because I’m braking too much. With the new setup, I’ll save a fortune in pads alone in the course of a year.
Evening, we have completed 12 hours of racing on the “2 pot” rear in conjunction with 4 pots up front/ABS and Nitron’s fully floating disc’s all round. All the details are on the Nitron site. If anyone wants the low down, contact Guy or Pete about the Uprights and tow links, etc…!
Jonnyfox, I know Phoenix motorsport have done this mod to atleast one car to help keep the front to rear brake balance right after fitting 4 pots upfront. I’m pretty sure it also retained the standard handbrake.
