2-11

Saw the 2-11 in the flesh today at my dealer here in stuttgart. Saw it at brands at he start of the year aswell but i never had a close look at the intercooler installation.

I have to say i find myself wanting it a lot.

But as an owner of an Exige S and knowing what hopeless air flow there is to the intercooler on the S i am dissapointed to see how small the air intakes are for the intercooler. The route the air takes to the rear mounted cooler is also very complicated. To top it off the intercooler is now above the exhaust!

All things considered i would say that engine bay cooling and intercooling loks like it will be worse than an Exige S. Which is a bit dissapointing considering it was a clean sheet design with only performance in mind…

Seems to go well though

I wouldnt be so sure of that…

After visiting the factory the other week Nick Adams seemed pretty confident that the cooling side of things was more than upto scratch even under prolonged useage.

P.s It is fanatastic to drive btw, with a lovely even spread of power right across the rev range without having to rag its arse off to get it to move…

Almost didnt want to get back in my car it was that good!!

I am sure it drives great and the way the SC delivers power is also fantastic. Thats why i want one, i imagine its like my S but with 200kg less!

But take a look at those intakes, they are tiny, they are not in a high pressure area, they have really long tubes back to the intercooler…which is itself situated above the exhaust. Engine bay cooling must be poor compared to the exige, its only intakes are to the intercooler (left and right) there is nowhere else for air to get in, the elise/exige has the side intakes and on the exige the whole engine cover is mesh. On the 2-11 the mesh area is a lot smaller…and it has no side intakes.

I could imagine a komo-tec style water jacket and front rad would solve any problems, if there is one. I know from my S that on a hot day, flat out on the autobahn you can feel the power being reined in by the ecu as the intake temps go up. I managed about five mins completely flat out last summer and at the end i was going a good 5km slower than at first!

Would suggest you get your self to the factory if your really intersted and all your questions will be answered…

Im no engineer but from what they were saying on the day it has all been carefully looked at and develpoment work on the cooling side of things has been carried out on numerous trips to the wind tunnel…

…fair enough.

Which would explain why it over heated on the start line at the Goodwood Festival of Speed then and never made it up the hill!

I’d suggest they did little static heat consideration. You wouldn’t want to drive one to a trackday for fear of getting stuck in traffic (assuming the road pack is still an offering).

I asked about the same Ian, apparently it was just a hose clip that had came loose on the radiator somwhere… 5 minute fix

AFter all is said and done it is still a Lotus of course…

With regard to the picture, I thought they all only came in that shocking colour combo? This one is just silver

I think you’ll probably find it’s some sort of development hack looking at the screen and other bits and pieces.

the pic is of the original car. It was later crashed at Spa and is now white.

The press pictures are of the first of the production run. The first cars get a fancy paint job and interior which is completely at odds with its focussed track caracter (IMO) I do not ever remember seeing a race car with a interior that matches the exterior…

A palmer Jag stuffed it in to the hay just after we started our run. We had been idling for an hour before and then 30 min waiting at the side before they sent us back to the line where we waited some more. Then the hose clip let go, I think it was not tight enough, this was the first production car they built…it took 15 minutes, a jack and a screwdriver to fix.

Any way because of that I got to have Jim Clark’s mechanic Bob Dance loan us some tools and come around to see how we were doing

The car was perfect for the rest of the weekend.

We did 1,700 miles in about 3 weeks and that was the only issue!

Was driving around Stuttgart a few weeks ago on my way back to Frankfurt in terrible rain and a yellow/white ? 2-11 came the other way on the Autobahn - both ways were travelling at about 50 KPH and having been in a similar position in May driving the Brenner Pass to the MM in an open AH 100-6 with aeroscreen I felt sorry for the guy driving it … maybe he was delivering it
