According to the manual for the 190 VHPD there should be an ITG foam filter inside the airbox. Standard should have two Pipercross foam cones within the ducting.
I have one cone filter at the junction of the ducting and the airbox (and a spare one hanging around in my parts bin).
Is one cone filter enough to keep the intake air clean and is what I’ve got faily standard, despite what the manual says?

That’s how it should be. Well worth buying some Pipercross cleaning stuff, & regularly (say every 2K-K miles, unless you’ve been razzing on a beach!) making sure it is clean!
Most people don’t add the (special) dirt-retaining foam oil and therefore dust manages to pass.
My trumpets are always clean but I wash and oil my filter regularly.
Which manual is that? I think the ITG filter was used on the Elise Sport 190, and Lotus considered it for the Exige, but for some reason they dropped it.
As Pesky says, I believe you’ve got the correct setup, except that the usual arrangement has a shorter duct hanging loose in the engine compartment, sucking in hot air from near the manifold.
Your car has the motorsport ducting and intake adaptor from the Elise 190. This gives you colder air and thus more power but it will suck in a bit more crap and thus need cleaning more often.
I think I’ve still got some of the cleaning fluid and oil if you’re interested. I can bring it to Donny on Saturday if you like.
I had the same prob with the dust so I now have the ITG and the pipercross has gone. The only prob with the ITG is you have to drill 4 more holes in the back plate to enable it to bolt in the air box.
I cleaned one of the filters a couple of days ago and have just oiled it up this morning (got some oil with the pipercross filter I bought for the Punto), thanks for the offers though guys. Will be refitting later, along with fixing my oil leak
Beach? Why would I take the car on the beach? Hope you’re not suggesting I was doing dohnuts or anything silly
No sand in the filter at all, which was suprising. However there was a load of small brown particles which turned out to be rust. The supporting wire on the inside of the motorsport ducting is rusty and bits are falling off and being pulled into the filter.
Everytime I post up something I find out the bit’s I’ve got have already been upgraded by Brendan I’m now having to resort to Ohlins, Alcon disks and a SC Honda just so I can change something
Quote from alternative air filter supplier regarding the 190 Exige:-
"Main problem with the (very cheap) brand X filter was that it (or both even) were supplied un oiled and so when it was used just allowed the dust (sand, small children, lead, churches, gravy etc) to pass through the filter after only a short period of time. "

Ah, that’s why it’s so grumpy at idle. Lumpy gravy.

Didn’t you notice you’ve already got THESE and THIS There’s nothing left to upgrade
I know you’ve got an S2 now, but there’s no need to ignore the engine weight issue.
Now if only I had the cannons mounted in the wings, I could blast the track day drivers who stick to the left hand side of the track and refuse to let anyone past them.

Ooooh. Get 'er!

If my experience is anything to go by, you’re talking about some kind of anti Porsche weapon Them buggers just never want to believe a little Lotus can get past them
I clean my cone jobbie in my bros putoline solution he uses to clean his crossers foam filters. Used the pipercross or K&N oil (cant remember which as I have both) after letting it dry.
Originally the cone filter looked like several storks had been nesting in the chuffer!

Clearly there are two options for which cone filter to remove, but the manual suggests that the one to leave should be at the trunking inlet rather than the airbox inlet end.
I’ve kept the one next to the airbox. Useful if the trunking start to disintegrate, otherwise you’ve got nothing stopping stuff going straight into the intakes.
What would be the issue with having both filters fitted?
Poor air flow?
I understand your set-up to be correct, as mentioned already on this thread, cars came with 2 pipercross cone-filters (to help drive-by noise) but are too restrictive, so everyone removes one of them along with the resonator gubbins.
I understand Lotus originally intended to use ITG as per the manual diagram above, but they changed to PiperCross later on (cost and noise issues probably).
Also the dirt inside your airbox will most likely be from the breather hose which comes from the cam-cover and is vented into the airbox, where it also dumps all that oil you see other peeps catch-tanks getting filled with… another environmentally driven solution.
