Any of you guys put 15/16 wheels under their Exige ?
How did it affect handling?
and if any one has pictures to see how it looks.
I expect acceleration to be better, top speed to be higher, car to be lower and cheaper tyres.
But “affraid” the car will be more twitchy when it comes to oversteer, but maybe that could be dailed out with the geo.
My S2 135R felt more stable with 16/17 then the Elise with 15/16. But maybe I am talking bull…
Perhaps in F1 testing to .001 sec with Kimi at the wheel… yes?
100 peeps in the same 1 Exige would probably be ± 10 seconds different around a lap of Donny etc. Personally for me, the Exige is not about how ‘fast’… its about how much ‘fun’ and pride about being an ‘Exiger’…
… and this is becoming more so with every year and second lost!!!
You got a fair point Pete. It is all about “driving fun”.
Just wondering if the fun would go up with smaller wheels due to the increase in acceleration.
Around 10 years ago me and a friend both drove an MR2. Both from 1991 and both only an exhaust and a aftermarket air filter.
He was driving on 17 inch wheels and I was on 15 inch.
It was very noticable that my car was much quicker of the line, during and top speed was higher.
Over diameter would be 30mm less comparing a 17 and 16 inch rear wheel.
The gearing would be reduced, so acceleration would be better, but top speed would be lower. And as Pete said, it wouldn’t look very good as the Elise offsets are a lot different.
Although I’d never alter my car, it’d be interesting to see Capo.
I thought my S1 Elise 111S was a lot nicer to drive on the road than the Exige, which has less feel and loads of bump steer. I’ll await the flogging…
Not a flogging…
Do you have the OEM LSS still fitted mate? The OEM geo set-up was weird as I had the same experience with Shrek! But Nitrons and a proper Geo later, NO bump steer, just that amazing light dancing steering with total confidence and control!
Sound like a toothpaste ad eh!!
Get a good Geo done, even with the LSS (LOWER it to 110/115mm) and you will be amazed at the difference!
Geo’d last in 2011 by Martin Edwards. It suffered understeer and bump steer at Blyton, post geo. Understeer since banished since the fitment of new AD08’s (I reckon the A048’s had gone off with age), but the bump steer is still there. It’s pretty bad at the long sweeping left hander at Blyton and I end up ‘sawing’ at the wheel. Do I need to drop the steering rack??
Also might be the bump steer setting at the rear of the car with the toe links… this is almost never set right on cars I’ve driven… my old Elise I spent 3 days getting it just right and custom machining shims and it was the sweetest handling Lotus I’ve ever driven. My Exige needs some work on this area as I can feel it’s not perfect… when I’m in my new garage I’ll be making myself up a proper geo rig.
I concurr completely, my car is as standard as can be (everything can be quickly unbolted) and is now reliable. I love the K, but also think it’s a ticking time bomb. If it ever detonates, I’ll look at options at the time. And yes it is tracked as often as funds allow.
Bigger side walls may mean it rides the bumps better, but it means more give in the corners, more roll. On track you’re more interested in handling than ride comfort!
Bigger sidewalls, where the word bigger does not earn the right to be written with a capital B as for example the rear wheel with 225/45/16 has only a 3mm higher side wall if we are then 245/40/17.
For the price of new set of wheels I can also get high hp conrods and pistons. Only need cam’s , gaskets and time to put it in my old engine and I gain more then the wheels will make up.
If I ever need to replace wheels or I can buy a cheap set of Victories I will swap to 15/16 I think.
