111R Race Car ?

Hi, I know its not an Exige but I thought I might ask your opinions about racing a 111R in the Elise Trophy or would I be better prepping an S1. Cheers Tony

Hi, I’ve tracked several different Elises before buying my S2 Exige. My personal view is that I would go for an S1. I had an S1 with the Bell & Collevile 160 upgrade and a set of Nitrons and actually found it quicker around Angelsey than my friends S2 Exige at the time. With the close ratio box, 160 engine and lighter weight S1 the gap between the cars is minimal.

I’m not sure of the exact regs but the measured power to weight rules make it all level playing.

From a cost point of view the parts for an S1 are cheaper but the Toyota should be more reliable so again, not much in it really.

I’m competing in my S2 in open class events and paying the penalty for the additional weight. Should have kept my S1 sport 190… but I really wanted an Exige

I agree with Wes, with less weight they handle a bit better and are cheaper to fix if you have a crash, I was going to get one to run as race car but the tax man kept stealing my budget for it :frowning: Also wish I’d kept my Sport 190 as well fantastic car

Agreed, my S2 Sport 190 was great I wish I could have kept it.

The yota engine and gearbox are just not that reliable for racing without internal upgrades - I think the S1 would be a much better option.

I don’t think that is entirely accurate, Gav raced an S2 Exige for a whole season in the Elise Trophy and it was pretty reliable.

You can’t compensate for mis-shifts…

As you cant modify the Toyota cars at all, they are very reliable. The power to weight regs in LOT, always did favour the S1, but that has been addressed and in my opinion it is a level playing field now.

A reliable, competitive S1 is not a cheap car though!!!

There are quite a few 25k+ S1 elises at the front of the grid in LOT

Thanks for your responses guys. Having driven both S1 and S2 111R I think the latter could be the best choice. I think the S2 cars would keep the series more current, the S1’s are getting a bit long in the tooth. Yota engined cars are getting cheaper. I see the mods to the engine are not permitted, would this include such things as upgrading oil pump rotor with billet item as this is a known weak point i.e. it can shatter causing complete engine failure. This mod wouldn’t increase power just reliability.

You are not allowed to open up the yota engine at all.

Im running a 111r in the elise trophy this year… Car to have in my opinion!!

Ok, I stand corrected about an S1… If Gav’s running a 111R then I’d take his experienced opinion :sunglasses:.
