048s and 888s

My rear tyres are all but shot so planning to switch from 048s to 888s. The 048s on the front have lots of life left in them so would end up with a mix of tyres. I assume that as the 048s and 888s are so similar it won’t be a problem but thought I’d check with those more knowledgeable than me. Any thoughts?

Fine, no problems and done it on my last two cars when I was in the same situation.

Did the same as well, not an issue.

Many thanks guys.

Hi …
let us know the best price for 888’s please , as i’m in the same boat !
cheers

Me too needing rears but have little cash due to the gearbox failure :frowning:

Normally camskill:

195/50/16 r888 = 94 each

225/45/17 r888 = 140 each

http://www.trackside-motorsport.co.uk/ were doing them for 133 last month I think, but would need to check postage, etc.

Bit of a hi-jack but I will need new rears very shortly after a walshy day, two trackdays and about 1500 miles. Is this reasonable wear and tear or am I driving like a numpty?

It’s the walshy day that’s done it. Mines at the tire fitters as we speak having been replaced exactly a month ago and i’ve done a donny evening, brands gp, knockhill, zolder, two silverstone evenings and a holiday in devon on them so probably 5.5 to 6k.
Previously I’ve managed a donny evening, croix-en-ternous(sp?) then abbeville on a set which lasted 4 days and less than 1k miles
I’m seriously considering a move to road tires to cut down on costs but I just love the g-forces too much

To be honest I would replace the whole set of tyres with the same brand. I ran worn 048’s on the front and new R888’s on the rears and it handling was interesting to say the least. I had to basically run my nitrons on full soft at the rears to dial out the understeer.

888’s on the rear and 48’s on the fronts of mine no problem, 888’s seem to last much better too. If your 48’s are worn then change them but other than that I would leave them.

agreed, i am running this set up for same reasons, but actually prefer the handling…im on standard susp. and maily road use, but i find the 888’s a bit more progressive, so you can feel the back end starting to go rather than the more all or nothing effect on the 048’s. when the fronts die i will change to888 all round. got mine next day delivered by camskill to a freinds garage and he fitted for free

Isn’t there an issue with number of heat cycles that these semi-slicks go through though? I seem to remember being told that although the fronts may have decent tread left, the rubber will go off after a certain number of heat cycles and therefore lose grip. It is best therefore to replace the fronts at the same time as the rears.

This could of course be complete bollox

Neal.

It’s probably a good time then to post my ignorance about heat cycles. I’ve obviously heard the term many times but I don’t really understand how it works.

Also, in terms of heat cycles, is there a significant difference between 048s and 888s.
