In the meanwhile I repaired the original starter motor with the spare part ordered from Wood Auto.

For the benefit of anyone else who may experience the same problem in the future, was it the pinion/lever part that needed replacing? Or was the cause something else?

The primary problem was that the gear was incorrectly shrinked on the flywheel (!) and consequently
the starter-cog was consumed abnormally (work performed by a Swiss "specialist" by the way).

After having replaced the clutch and the flywheel during the complete overhaul, sometimes the starter didn' t engage on the gear...

Problem solved with the new part delivered by Wood Auto (many thanks to "tlracer" for the tip).

Remounted the repaired starter motor today.
Everything works nicely.

Starter motors in general seem to suffer from minor but problematic faults - a case in point is the small Denso units. These are generally very reliable but the solenoid contacts wear and they stop working. Fix takes 10 minutes plus a few readily-available and inexpensive parts.
