Battery + clamp recommendations

Post by andybond »

Evening,

It appears my battery is losing charge faster than I might like. I believe its on its way out.

I want to fit a lightweight battery and clamp.

Any advice on which ones?

I had this setup in my Elise after the OEM battery made a bid for freedom half way round a Blyton Park lap(!)

The bracket 'came with it' as an option from most vendors that sold the PC680 battery. I also fitted it with a 'tap style' isolator so it was disconnected for long park-up sessions, never had any requirement to trickle it or jump it in the time I had it. I'll be getting round to fitting a similar setup to my Exige as soon as I .... well, get round to it!

That pretty much what I want. I am curious how people have mounted them to the floor using the standard bolt ( if possible ) or all gone aftermarket like your elise?

It was easy enough for me to just rivnut it onto the boot wall, nothing behind there really except the washer bottle which is easy to avoid.

My original battery went walkies because the factory bolt setup failed.

Here is what I am thinking

Odyssey AGM Extreme PC680 (M6 Internal Stud Fitting) from Euro with the 50% off comes in at £86.99 delivered
Odyssey Brass Battery Conversion Posts coming from the rally store weighing in at £19.44 delivered
A snazzy cage to hold it against a TBC design utlising the standard OEM captive bolt from here https://www.rallynuts.com/race-batterie ... posts.html coming in at £23.95

£130.38 so far, plus Ill need some ally flat bar to use and some angle which is available on ebay for around £15 delivered. Then its a case of drilling and grabbing some nuts and bolts to make a cage retainer

IT in theory will look a little something like this when finished

Made a clamp for mine to use the original bolt from a joist hanger I bought in B&Q. Cost <£5

This is my setup, it’s a lot like Fonzey’s but haven’t used the brass posts.
Got the battery, bracket & charger from Merlin. Also fitted a cut off switch.

Haven’t used the charger much, the battery pretty much looks after itself providing you remember to use cut of switch. If you do need to charge it make sure to use an agm type charger for the odyssey.

Bracket is just bolted through using nut inserts rivet nuts.

I was hoping to utilise the existing mount point but you chaps have given me some ideas. Thanks

I think my only concern with using the original fixing is (I assume) you'd intend to put the battery flat on its back rather than upright. I know it's unlikely, but the potential for something touching/connecting the terminal posts would be a worry. I'm sure I'm not the only person who finds random tools/cans of tyre sealant rolling around my boot!

I am following with interest though, as if I can take any shortcuts and get a better install with my Exige I'll gladly copy off of you
