Having had both the a0-39’s and the toyos on my car I have got a fairly good idea of how they compare.
The Yoko’s are really track tires and they are far quicker on the circuit than the Toyo but far worse in bad conditions on the road.

It’s maybe got more to do with driving styles… and i know yours is better than mine but… i have to disagree with you on this because I found that the A039 was better than the Toyo in EVERY condition… possibly i just got knowledgeable about my car by the time i went back to A039’s but A039’s never surprised me either on the road or on the trck… the Toyos gave me a few surprises in both environs.
Rox, you never tried ‘adjusting’ your line on a fast/wet roundabout?..I did once, & hey presto, VERY Elise like snap oversteer
Tim.
ohh yes… i experienced snap oversteer in my exige… usually wet and usually on roundabouts… ehh RemarkLima and more frequently with Toyos than with A039’s…
any car should understeer a little to get it’s best grip (slip angle and all that jazz) Ian
Ian - the best grip is when all tyres are operating within their optimum slip angle range, and if you are using the same type / make of tyre the slip angles would be much the same for all tyres assuming similar temperatures and pressures.
If you have understeer it means that the slip angles on the front are greater than the slip angles at the rear, leading to the front tyres losing grip compared to the rear. Hence the front of the car slides out, and this is definitely not the best total grip.
When all the tyres are at their optimum slip angle the car adopts a ‘tail out’ yaw angle in the region of a few degrees , which some people find uncomfortable - some even misinterpret this as oversteer, but that is incorrect.
To drive near the limit we need to learn the difference between a stable tail out yaw angle, and oversteer, which is where the rear slip angles exceed the front slip angles leading to the tail sliding out…

Alas what I would have given for oversteer… And snap oversteer would be a dream! Buyt just cronic to the point of nothing understeer is just… sob sob
Maybe I should have grabbed a handful of handbrake

My 39’s didn’t have that much tread on them when I got the car so they were pretty shocking in the wet so you may well be right. I find that on a wet road now, with the Toyo’s, the car is very very quick. Probably the quickest wet weather car i have driven on the road. You do have to watch out though because the grip can disapear very very quickly.
Don’t necessarily listen to my views on tires though because I tend to like tires with high grip that disapeers quickly as opposed to lower grip and more progressive. I find that it’s easier to sit the car on the absolute limit that way. Wierd, I know.
Maybe I should have grabbed a handful of handbrake
And if that had gone wrong EVOSAL knows how to fix a damaged chassis side!
Ian
I reckon so… in RL’s case its almost certain that nose-first was the best recipe… that can all be replaced easy and with a new clam and some paint he will probably end up happy that it happened… weird innit…
Looks like Toyo have brought out a new tire so supersede the T1-S, called the T1-R. Apparently it’s quite good. I may give them a go after my rears are finished.
