When Sean Edwards drove my Exige around OP we did 2 corners and he calmly asked ‘why hasn’t this got an LSD?’…he reckoned it would really benefit from it.
This could turn into a real hob nobs discussion now.
I know Scuffers and Randy have always gone on about “a well setup car doesn’t need an LSD” and to a certain extent I agree.
But in the very limited amount of racing I have done, I have made up ground on more Honda (and I’m not having a go at Honda’s here, its just that is predominantly what I race against) cars out of tight to medium corners, due to them spinning the inside wheel than I care to remember. Scuffers and Randy included!
A plated diff is a different story, they do upset the handling of a car and will make it push on in a corner, but in my experiance a Quaife ATB type diff will not, there is no downside at all in my opinion.
Yep, no intention to turn it into one of those matey!
I’m not trying to suggest they aren’t useful at all - far from it as I’ve never driven a Lotus with one fitted, I’m just saying that perhaps there are more fundamental things wrong if you are spinning the inside wheel all the time.
The only corner I’ve had the inside wheel spinning in the dry was Croft hairpin onto the start/finish straight. Obviously it’s perhaps different with Supercharged Hondas… but an NA Honda doesn’t have the power to light the wheels up everywhere on a dry track.
If I can afford it I will be having the Quaiffe one as it sounds most sensible, but it is a tough choice all round
I’m having a Quaife fitted to my S1 as we speak (or write). Can’t tell you how it drives yet but technically there are only upsides. With 320hp I think it is a must and had now doubt ordering the thing. Money well spent.
Going to Quaife ATB here (in my new Quaife box)… found that I was spinning up the inside wheel a bit on slower off camber corners, so anything to minimise that when I throw more power at it has to be good for ultimate pace
I’ve got a LSD of course my rocket pig has LSD, I had a Quaife in the standard gear box also…The thing to remember is who ever is installing the Quaife must be very careful as the sixth gear can easily be damaged, if it is you can replace it with the US Toyota sixth gear that will give you a 500 rpm taller ratio… 80mph drops from 4,000 to 3,500 rpm… Better mileage
Also , (maybe a fluke) I had a driveshaft snap immediately after having my diff fitted…
Odd failure jfk, which part of the shaft broke?
Just by the groove …
Coming back on the LSD, does Quaife have different models or only one?
