Not sure I’ve mis-read what you said, but it sounds like your are going on your dads policy as a named driver.

I was thinking exactly the same thing but didn’t want to start the alarm bells ringing.
wow so many replies, thanks everyone i will just write a general reply. yes i am a named driver and i understand the risks, but for this reason i have put the car in my dads name (which doesnt bother at all really) and i am also insured on my sisters car as a named driver so it doesnt seem so obvious.
I know i should have started my own policy at 17 but as you say young (especialy male) drivers get ripped off with insurance. when i got my mini for my first car at 17 they wanted like 3.5k for insurance on my own and simialr prices for when i was 18 and 19. we ended up paying 900 on average each year with me as a named driver so instead of paying roughly 9k for the first 3 years. i did try at 18 to see how much it would have been if i had one years no claims and it was still something like 2700. The problem is as i have got older and got better faster cars it makes it harder to get insurance on my own now without paying a stupid amount of money. i will try again at 25 to see how much it would be by myself and if its not too much more then i will go for it. Id love it to have my own insurance basically.
yeah i understand that hot hatches and the exige are completely different and i will take my time, especially so in wet conditions lol.
most of the specialist insurers (i think all actually) as you say wont insure under 25s unfortunantly
Think you’ve been trying the wrong companiesm or have a high rated postcode…
I had a pug 106 gti at 17, and that costs me 1200 for 10 months - most I’ve ever paid on insurance. This dropped to 1.1k at 18 on a brand new Mini cooper s.
Most companies now will give you no claims for the number of years you’ve been named driver, providing you take the policy out with them. Give them a call and ask.
hi dicko
i dont post very often, but lurk here alot as im more active on MLOC. but your situation seems worthy of a post or commnet, although im not sure you;ll like it, but here goes… ??
i cant honestly believe you have spend 30-40k+ on a high powered, very desirable sports car and are faffing about with named drivers/ insurance etc. maybe im a bit nieve, but from my own and friends experience if god forbid anything happens to the car the insurance company will do everything they can to get out of paying, and im sure in the small print there is info about, main drivers, named drivers, etc. that will give them an option to screw you.
you seem like a switched on, well informed bloke, who knows his cars and respects what the exige can do performance wise, so i would hate to read a post about, through no fault of yours, some idiot trying to provoke you to race plows into you, or the car gets nicked and left with nothing.
hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction, but i;d be saving hard to start getting your own insurance asap, maybe buy a “dog” for 500, old pug/saxo or something and stick it on the drive and insure that for least possible 3rd party or something for a few years then transfer your no claims to the exige when your 25?? -

John, with respect, I think you’re missing the point. You & your dad should have a think
I just hope you don’t have an accident, & a 3rd party suffers a serious personal injury.
And things have moved on since this: BBC NEWS | Programmes | Moneybox | Warning over insurance 'fronting'
i really appreciate and respect all the replies and i understand that there is a risk of being found out about it but at the minute i have no choice unfortunantly. I understand this is the wrong way. The only thing i can do now until i build up my no claims and get insurance on my own is make sure i do everything possible to prevent getting caught, such as the car registered in my dads name, im insured on another car, i live at the same address as my dad. i do understand it shouldnt be the way to look at this but like i say at this moment at this time i havnt got much choice. I totally intend to get my own insurance ASAP.
i was actually thinking about getting an old banger and just insuring it 3rd party so i get my no claims up, it would definantly be worth while.
Thanks for your replies, i dont mean to offend or upset anyone if i have
John,
Don’t worry, you’re not offending or upsetting anyone on here. We’re just looking out for you.
Honestly, I’d feel sick in the stomach if you had a smash in your car and ended up losing it because the insurance company wouldn’t pay out. Especially with those tyres and the winter coming up, if you’re not familiar with how the car behaves, it just increases the chance you could have in having a spin.
Again I’m not suggesting that you’re going to crash it, just airing on the side of caution. I’m by no means the worlds best driver, but I’m IAM and ROSPSA Gold qualified. I’ve also been on many many many driver training days and am in the process of taking my test to get into the HPC (High Performance Club). Even taking it easy, on a greasy road on “legal limit” AO48’s, the wobble I had gave me a bit of a shock.
The other time was in the rain coming off of a roundabout and just opening the throttle at about half way. The rear end almost snapped right around! I’m not trying to scare you, just telling you what I’ve experienced as a “qualified advanced driver”…what ever that means these days haha!

Don’t think you’ve upset anyone - just think we ‘old’ guys are trying to help you avoid any of the pain we have all seen people go through
Take it steady as they say and enjoy the car
You must get a HUGE discount then mate!

Sort of.
They pay me instead of me paying them
Trouble is, they pay in boxes or cartons of Bisto!
Years ago I had a boxster and a 200 mini, I ended up putting the mini on ‘lay up’ cover. A few years later I had a claim which lost me my no NCD on my main car, however I then discovered my mini had been accruing(?) no claims still! It soon got swapped round. It would probabley need you to do your home work but may be an option to legitimately but cheaply build up your NCD.
Gav
guys have any of you ever had to make a claim about elephant/admiral (they are the same company!)
they are SHIT
They dont cover optional extras in the event of a claim. NONE. Whats an optional extra in their eyes- ANYTHING. Metallic paint, any packs, any mods or upgrades- they would replace your car with the ultra basic model
I must say I agree with the guys on here, I realise its nice to get the best car you can, however spending 40k on a car and not being able to insure it seems madness. I honestly think you would of been better buying a cheaper car you could afford to insure.
In a nut shell what you are doing is getting a ticket to (in theory) make it legal to drive your car on the road. But and its a very big but, if you crash your car and write it off leaving the insurance co with a 40k claim (maybe more if you wreck someone elses car) they will look at every detail to get out of paying just because you as the named driver were driving the car.
Its really not difficult to work out if your Dad has his own car and you don’t have another car…
So I hope for your sake all of the finance (if you have it) and the V5 is in your Dads name, I hope the cash for the car comes out of your Dads Bank and you do not have a transfer for the same amount to his bank or withdraw a similar amount from an ATM every month. Fraud is serious stuff and insurance companys take it very seriously.
I hope I don’t come across as being harsh as like the others I am just trying to look out for you, I would hate too see anyone loose their pride and joy and their money
For the record I was 22 when I got my first elise (32 now, how time flys) anyway I wanted a sport160 but I got a 111s, the reason… I could not afford the insurance on the 160.
Boothy
Wise words very well said Boothy.
In this litigation driven world you just cannot be too careful… and as my Dad said… all good things come to those who wait.
I understand everyone is just looking out for me and i appreciate that . yeah all the money came out of my dads account and i am paying him back gradually as to not make it obvious. Plus i have just done a mock quote on internet as if i had 2 years no claims in 2 years time (when im 25) and ended up getting a really good quote on the exige so maybe buying a cheap car and insuring it in my name is the way forward so that in a year or 2 i can get on my own insurance. Also buying a cheap car and insuring it as a main driver will also make it harder for the insurance to find/prove i have been the main driver on the exige
Mate good luck with the car, but putting more and more details of how you plan to cover your tracks of an insurance fraud on a public internet forum just can’t be a good idea.
I’m not having a go I’m honestly not,…heh I used to be a named driver on my Dad’s policy when I was 17…but that was a long time ago and things have changed. For one t’internet did not exist and the possibility of me writing something on a public forum and it being used against me to invalidate my insurance in the event of a claim was just not in the realm of the possible.
If you fully understand and are happy with the risk you are taking then ok, but if I were you I’d keep the details of the arrangement to yourself.
ok thanks benja. your right about mentioning it all on a public forum and i know i shouldnt have.suppose i should delete all my posts on the topic?
Just how much is it if you get the quote in your own name? Or even if you leave the car in your Dad’s name but have you as the main driver? Those are the only true valid options.
Even for our family Mondeo, I’m the owner on the V5 but I’ve got my wife down as the main driver as she uses it every day and I occasionally drive it at the weekend. Special treat
Get Russ T on the policy too mate!
