I do wonder though, you let a mate have a drive, he rolls it… nobody else is involved, do you say you were driving and all is well, or say it was your mate and lose 15k?
Absolute no brainer - you tell the truth. I’m sick of people trying to defraud Insurance Companies with spurious claims. I’m also sick of hearing about Insurance Companies trying to wriggle out of legitimate claims too. I suspect the two things are not unrelated, & are a direct result of those bloody ambulance chasers & claims specialists who advertise their services everywhere, nowadays.

Come on now, get off the fence…are you for or against a claim
I suspect the conversation went along the lines of:
“Mate I’ve rolled your car!”
“Oh &%$, you @&%$#+! You’re paying!”
“Well, over course…although I don’t suppose you actually happened to be driving instead of me?”
“No way mate, I’m not going to jail for fraud if it all falls apart. Anyway, aren’t you covered on your insurance?!”
“Ummm?”
That would mean calling the insurance first to let them know he’s going to be driving and adjusting the difference in premiums, right?
Never tried that, to be honest ringing them to get a quote is usually painful enough and I think in the UK the “you bend it you pay” rule is usually played. Most drivers being insured third party whilst driving other vehicles.
I think how it works is that with “most” policies, it allows the POLICYHOLDER to drive ANOther’s car with 3rd party cover ie you hit another car/pedestrian whilst driving someone else’s car, you are covered for the damage to the car/person you hit, but NOT for damage to the car you were driving. (My Exige policy does not extend to covering me to drive someone else’s car with 3rd party cover, although my Peugeot insurance does!).
As you say, if someone else’s car is to be covered whilst you are driving, you have to be named as an additional driver on the owner’s policy. This type of cover applies to me whilst I drive any of Russ’s cars, & he is fully covered as a named driver, on my Exige policy.
So in the case in point, the crashed Exige was not covered by either the owner’s policy (cos the actual driver was not a named driver), nor was it covered by the friend’s policy, which would only give cover for 3rd party damage.
PS Tim - yep, it does make me angry, cos all of us honest guys have part of our premiums costed to cover fraudulent claims, plus a levy to a fund which pays out when a totally uninsured driver causes damage.
However, I do feel sorry for the bloke who let his mate drive it, only to go & prang it!
Uldis, I think that’s about right. I’ve heard a few folk say ‘my insurance covers me for any car’. Maybe for some, but it’s only ever third party, so no use for the bloke here
Well, you guys confirmed then what I had understood: only third party covered.
If there’s no super-duper-cover insurance available, it’s kind of difficult to lend cars like ours to “friends”.
At least the guy i staking it on the chin then…
so I suspect there will be no car lending at Donny next week
trackday cover would normally be excluded anyway, so it shouldn’t change anything significantly, other than highlight the issue and put it in the front of peoples minds.

It may be possible to arrange temporary cover for a friend, via your Ins Broker (such as Autotorque). However, I very much doubt you’d be able to do it with the likes of Tesco, Elephant etc.
Unless I know I have fully comp cover when driving anyone else’s car, I won’t drive it, unless I know that I can afford to fix it out of my own resources! One of biggest regrets is turning down the offer to drive a ClubSport Spec.GT3 around Anglesey, after I had let the owner have a go in my Exige! I knew I couldn’t afford to fix it if, I’d smashed it.(Mind you at the time, he not only had the GT3, but a 360, a Moggy Plus8, & also regularly raced his own F40 & Caterham - so I knew HE had a conker or two )
