Forge Motorsport Intercooler

jfk, is it possible to give me the extra height of the new intercooler compared to stock one? It wil be really helpful, thanks.

Hi Fred… of course…
I,ll measure the two intercoolers tomorrow and post the heights

The centre boot stay is an issue for a std intercooler, I found out first hand and have a large dent in mine, Lotus always threatened to replace it under warranty but never have

Hi Fred ,
I’ve measured and took photo’s today…

As you can see below the Forge Motorsport Intercooler is approx 170 mm tall measured from the mounting bracket…

The standard cooler is approx 133 mm tall measured from the same point…

Hope this helps you.

Thanks a million,

I have several options:

  • see if it works like that (but you can’t predict the engine’s movements) and apparently on the stock intercooler, it has already happened that the strut went against the intercooler and marked it.
  • make a home-made tube that I can hold horizontally when it’s not used
  • wait for the new strut rod developed by Thomasio (lotustalk.com)

So it’s not be a big issue…

Here’s some strut pictures too…

Thanks again, it was my pending question
I have looked at mine and I will remove it this weekend to see which space I can have and use.

Your input is really great. I see that we can use the black plate to fix something.

How does this intercooler compare to the RLS and Cup intercoolers in terms of dimension and performance?

How does this intercooler compare to the RLS and Cup intercoolers in terms of dimension and performance?

Only time will tell…

The Forge Motorsport intercooler is the same size as the Cup intercooler. It’s of a tube and fin core design - I believe the RLS intercooler is of a bar and plate core design. No idea on the Cup intercooler though.

I always thought that all else being equal, the tube and fin core will be less efficient than the bar and plate core design.

Looking at the pics of the intercooler removed would it be possible to make a heat shield to go under the intercooler and reduce/prevent heat soak? would it be worth while?

I have been looking into this, I was thinking something along these lines: http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/attachments/f163/100648d1226129978-cup-car-gearbox-inspection-p7164399.jpg. You can see it under the intercooler.

I have emailed Peter at Forge about it it’s pointless, no response so far. Will report back when I find out if they think it’s worth it, or if they tried it at all. Looks easy to do, and you could add some additional heat foil for even better protection.

Just been looking at my car and it does not look difficult to create a shield sat on top of the frame between the frame and the rubber supports, could it be made from the same shield as is used around the exhaust? I forget the name of it.

Just had a reply from Peter at Forge, the heat shield between the mounts and intercooler is under development.

Along with an uprated toe link kit a brace and intercooler pipes among other things.

Good to know that they are really working hard to deliver a “finished” product, that’s exactly what I have asked him 3 weeks ago (but neither got a reply…)

Well it took 2 and a bit weeks and a follow up email to get that. It appears he only responds to the info@ address not directly to him.

Thinking about it it looks pretty easy to make. I’ll measure it up and take it to a mate who loves playing with metal, see if he’ll knock it up for me…

Does someone know what will be a reasonable power package choice with an upgraded air/air intercooler (Forge/RLS,Lotus)?

260HP Max? If we see the latest Lotus versions?

I think this info is required when you think of the upgrade traject that you want to take as today we have apparently 2 options:

  • intercooler air/water and go over the 270-280HP (Sinclaire/Komo-tec)
  • intercooler air/air (bigger) and ??

With a 2bular header and proper tune you should see 254 rwhp… 290+BPH
