maybe a new sticky thread would be a good idea with the petition link for a bit.

Not surprisingly, the views on this web site are all pro-Mallory - and quite right too but, as ever, there are two sides to the story. One aspect that is not well publicised is ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back’ – nothing or little to do with motor sport - and united the Kirkby Mallory village community into opposing the continued operation of Mallory Park Circuit as is.

Peckleton Parish Council Meeting : Held on 15th August 2011 in Kirkby Mallory Old Schoolroom : Minutes

Abstracts :

“Most of the 72 members of the public were at the meeting to express their concerns with respect to activities on the Mallory Park Motor Racing Circuit.”

“With regard to the Racing Circuit, a high proportion of those attending contributed to the debate which was allowed to proceed for approximately ninety minutes. The main concerns were centred around an ‘AwesomeFest’ event which was held at the circuit on the 29th - 31th of July. This had not been a controlled race meeting, just an opportunity for loud music, and for young people to slide, skid and drift their noisy cars around the circuit at high speed.”

“Disappointment was expressed that Mr Ward (Manager of Mallory Park Circuit) and a representative from the H&BBC Environmental Health Department had not attended the meeting.”

72 members of that community, haranguing a Parish Council for 90 minutes, is not “a few grumpy neighbours”. They seem to have legitimate reason for their concerns – and Mallory Park’s management appear guilty of a classic case of failed community relations

It is well worth reading the entire Minutes of that Meeting, for its detailed analysis of the concerns of the Kirkby Mallory community, and the failure of Mallory Park to maintain good relations with their neighbours, or even communicate with them. By this failure, they have risked the continued use of their circuit by the more professional end of the motor racing fraternity. I must also say that, as an organiser of race meetings at Mallory Park for several years, it has been extremely annoying to turn up and find that not only is there your race meeting in progress but also unrelenting use of the motor cycle scramble track that lies on the Mallory Park site between the circuit and the village. This generates much more noise than the average race meeting and may confuse the local community as to who is actually creating the noise.

The appeal by Mallory Park has emerged very late in the day and only after the local authority responded to the complaints with a threat of legal action. It is 20 months since that Parish Council Meeting The circuit operators clear failure to ensure their events conformed to agreed environmental and sound limitations set from 1985, and their lack of engagement with the local community has endangered the availability of the circuit to us all.

Yes, we must support the continued use of Mallory as a motor sport venue but we must also ask the owners to be more engaged with the complainers.

As ever, Mike, many thanks for your detailed & professional insight into all matters motorsport, which I’m sure we are all very appreciate of.Keep up the good work!

Fair play Mike, as ever there are at least two sides to every story.
