Exige rally project....Evo III

Thanks Ade, I’ll check that out

Banjos, flexis, . . it’s a whole new vocabulary

After burning the midnight oil I’ve made some progress on the mods. All 4 of the VX 5 stud hubs have been replaced with 4 stud Lotus ones. On the rears it’s very difficult to access the 3 hub retaining bolts. I thought I would have to detach the whole upright and do it on the bench but in the end I found that if you undo the TCA bolt and remove the rear caliper you can swing the upright round to give access to the bolt heads.

There’s a significant weight saving by going to the Lotus hubs. Each one is 400g lighter than the VX hub. Add in the weight of the rear spacers and bolts and I’ve saved 6 kg in hubs

After unwrapping the AP 4 pots I couldn’t bare to put them back in the box so I decided to go for it and fit them. Luckily since the car doesn’t have ABS I was able to access the hoses without removing the clam, just by taking the wheelarch liners out.

Everything is in place now, new hubs, 308mm Alcon discs, AP 4 pots and stud conversion kit.

I took my time bleeding the system using a pressure bleed kit. I did several bleeds on each corner to flush the system through. Unfortunately I ran out of time to test the setup so that’s tonights priority job!

Looking good!

That does look good Wes :sunglasses: I’ve been using AP grooved on the front for a while now and found them along with my set up quite excellent. I guess you and I have braided hoses, SRF and PF pads…mostly I’ll be interested to know how long they last buddy?

I have installed RS 14 pads on the rear and left the ds2500 in the 4pots. First impressions :frowning: not like yours matey. Ok I need to rebleed the system as the pedal was spongy but the balance didn’t seem right. I’m pretty sure it was the fronts that were locking up first. It certainly didn’t squeeze my eye balls out under hard braking. Something’s not quite right yet??

The difference will be the pads.

What pads do you recommend I go for on the front 4 pots? PF01, PF97 or RS14?

The RS14 on the rear are brand new so I don’t really want to bin them, I put them on to replace the CL5’s that were on there.

I’ve run DS3000 on the Puma and found them outstanding, I thought the 2500’s would still be good.

the only item I found that finally got the brake balance correct was moving the front 2 pots to the rear, I do still feel you could do with more rear braking and hope to try larger rear discs at some point, but then I will have to junk the handbrake which doesn’t appeal too much :frowning:
Still want a cheap simple solution to the handbrake problem when you put the 2 pots on the back

PF01’s are the best pad I have ever used on a track. RS14’s just seem to have too many problems of material transfer under harsh conditions.

Typical last minute chaos. The first rally is on Friday night, the New Brighton promenade rally.

I was supposed to take the car to Crewe on Monday night for it’s competition logbook. I hadn’t gone far when it started to rear wheel steer with the throttle on/off -'ollocks. I had to abandon the trip and put it back in the garage.

After some investigation it was, as suspected, a rear toe link outer bolt that had come loose, lucky it didn’t break while driving. While I was checking it over I found the brand new hub bearing on the other side was knacked, loads of free play, after only 100 miles of testing. I blame Tim and Ben for that as they made me slide it wildly around the brands rally course

I picked up a new hub assembly tonight from Christopher Neils. Maybe there’s a reason that they’re 4 times more expensive than the ones on eBay :frowning:

It’s all fitted. Just been out for a test in the dark… I love this car  good trial really as the first stages tomorrow night are in the dark :astonished: the car has the 2007 lights and they’re suprisingly good for a lotus. Just as well as I haven’t sourced a lamp pod for it yet.

I’ll have to try again tomorrow night to get it logbooked, the clocks ticking.

We’ve been seeded 44 out of 90 which is reasonable as I haven’t competed in the last year. The S1 Exige is running number 35, last time Bill wooped me in the Toyota car, hopefully we are a bit more even matched on power to weight this year. It’s only fun :sunglasses:

Guilty as charged, I literally had to beg you to hoon it around like a nutter.

Glad that it’s sorted Wes and good luck for the weekend bud.

Good luck dude.

Thanks guys. Successfully passed it’s logbook check tonight, ready to rock!

Good luck mate

need in car video!!
