Bigger is always going to better when it comes to brakes. The difficult bit is quantifying how much better the 4k kit is, over the 2k kit.
The worst thing you can do however is make it a little better, and find that it’s still not enough. It gets really frustrating, really quickly to spend 2k, only to find out you should have spent 4k!
I really would go down the SRF fluid first off though, as that wuld be even more frustrating if thats all it needed!!
Problem with the Lotus 308mm solid disc is that they are only available drilled.
I’ve tried them for track use and they work absolutely fine, its just that they dont last very long. I think I had 2-3 trackday’s out of them before the cracks from the holes were beyond what i considered safe to use, however they still had plenty of meat left on them as such…
For mainly road use they would be more than adequate and id be using them over the 2 piece discs simply for cost if for no other reason (you woulnd’t see any benefit of ali belled discs for the road).
If your going to go the 4-pot route for track use then bite the bullet and do it properly with as set of bells and grooved discs is what Im saying you’ll only end up having to buy them anyway…
Certainly Sean’s recommendation is what I would be looking to do if cost is an issue. 295/304/308 up front with a decent pad is all you should ever need for 20-30min blasts on a trackday.
For what its worth we ran the 111R (945kg race weight) around Brands Indy last year in the 1000k for 9hrs using nothing more than ali belled AP295 up front, oem 288 rears and PF pads with no overheating issues what so ever… In fact it was all new on at the beginning of the race and was what i was still using at the weekend just gone still with plenty of meat on everything.
Don’t waste your cash on SRF (unless it is already in there) I use Motul RBF600 it is easier to deal with and mixes with other fluids easier than SRF, it still has the same boiling point and is less hygroscopic(?) so lasts a bit longer.
As for the discs buy in bits if required, bells one month rotors the next with the spacers for the caliper then look for a 2nd hand setup to get the calipers.
As Gav says only used grooved, many of us have learned by experience not to use drilled, I even cracked standard rears in a year of trackdays!
PS Speak to John he has a slightly cheaper solution that uses 315mm discs
If it helps I can do the calipers from linky 1 and the alloy belled ap discs from linky 2 in one kit.
But please remeber the Lotus AP discs have an odd PCD (190.5) so you dont have disc choice in the future. If you use the Nitron bell (177.8pcd) Then discs from 295mm to about 320mm are availabe from AP, Alcon etc etc.
Some use the AP calipers with a small spacer and 315mm AP discs on my Nitron bells - Dont they Sean!!!
Just ordered some bolts for discs to carrier from our friends at ^^^^^^^ Seriously Lotus and got a call about a query in about 10 mins after placing the order.
Price
AP are direct fit, Caparo are with a bracket.
Pads on Caparo are about 5% smaller in surface area than the AP pads
Caparo calipers are slimmer so will fit inside the standard skinny Elise wheels with a 308mm disc, The AP calipers wont!!
Pads for AP calipers everybody has in stock in every compound and make.
Caparo pads I stock but only in 2 or 3 makes, butb they are available in most compounds if you know what to as for.
Im tols one of the front running racers used the caparo calipers to great effect (podiums) but never verified that!!
